I think this action by the DEA allowing morphine sulfate back on the market is just a minor pretense for the FDA to act like they care about the suffering of chronic pain patients.
I know you have read the FDA REM proposals and I think anyone with chronic pain who has to take prescribed extended release narcotics should. I give some links on my blog, there is information here in previous posts as well as people can google it on the blog.
If those reforms are enacted no doubt it will reduce the number of doctors and pharmacies that are willing to prescribe the narcotics that are on the FDA's list. I still don't quite understand their true motivation. If they have done any real research, perhaps they have not, then they know that only a small number of chronic paiin patients abuse prescription medication. They say they are worried about "the community" meaning teenagers or other people that may steal drugs from chronic pain patients, use them or sell them on the street. This "community" if the FDA gets their wish and severely reduces the number of physicians who will prescribe these narcotics, will just go elsewhere to obtain drugs so all they have done is cut off one supply. For people who abuse drugs, there are still an abundent supply of drugs on the illegal market.
I see that all it will do is keep more chronic paiin patients from receiving the medication they need to help control their pain to get by day by day. The FDA would never takes insulin away from diabetics, cardiac meds away from cardiac patients or antidepressants away from people who are depressed unless they are confirmed by studies to cause harm to patients. These medications are more dangerous than narcotics (look at real research into studies about long term narcotic usage) and all of these drugs have abuse potential. Many teenagers who abuse drugs when they are going through their grandmother's "stash" don't just take narcotics, they take other medications to experiment with affects the drugs might produce.
I have been to recreational drug sites and narcotics are only one class of drugs that "abusers" misuse.
The FDA has already kept two new drugs from coming onto the market as it locksteps its way into the "War on Drugs." This country was founded on individual rights and how many more decades are the Federal Government going to keep pouring millions of dollars into this "War on Drugs." There is a problem but the way things are going is certainly not a solution. Hitting "softer targets" such as doctors and patients does nothing but rack up innocent causualties.

If you do not make pain killer available then the black market will boom and more death will occure.. In countries Eurrope, Canada Mexico where you can buy these drugs over the counter, there are less addiction and death.
Here in the USa since the crackdown on pain clinic, the elderly cannot get their pain killers except by going to a Pain clinic once a month, in their wheelchairs with oxygen. This is worst than the 70 death reported. Doctors should not be responsible for one death. These people will find other ways. Sugar causes more death and costs billion from Diabetes and loss of limb and yet it is not branded as illegal, what about drinking and driving how many death and you still can buy beer as you want.. Hypocrates here, I am french so sorry for the mispelled word.
thanks, as always for the info, karen..i was especially, interested in this, because morphine is one of the pain meds i take!!...thank you, cindi
Cindi, Once they pull one medication from people like us who NEED the medication. They will start pulling more & more & more meds from us.
I'v been in pain over 50yrs. 24/7. I read many post's from others who want to 'be out of pain', I wish they all can go back to their 'life' they had before. All I can tell them is be 'happy' to just calm your pain down, there are a few who will go back to their 'old life'..but only a few.
2 yrs. ago my slipper got caught as I was coming in from the garage, I shatted my kneecap, which didn't heal right. It gives out on me all the time, which causes me to fall. A few mons ago I fell & brke my arm so bad they had to put in a rod, then the Dr. desided that rod was too long, so back I went for a shorter rod. The Dr. said I was healing very well, then I had to fix a pipe under the sink. That's when I hit my elbow on another pipe, fracturing it, thats when the Dr. told me that I had fractured my elbow, but not bad enough for him to operate on. Now that I hit it so hard he had to operate on it. As I was getting ready to go home a Nurse tells me..I should stop the meds I'm taking, they are the reason I fell. I asked her if I stop the meds will the discs that I have 'lost' in my spine come back, will my 'Kyposis stop growing on too my spine..She had no answer.
Many people look at us 'painers' as nothing but 'Drug Addicts', that 'we should learn to live with the pain', many have all the answers & will spend hrs. & hrs. giving us advice. I'm sure you know many people like that. My Sister puts me down for taking pills & she grew-up seeing me crawl around, doing my chores & her's, I was the one who got in trouble if her's wern't done, not her. She has back problems too, from doing stupid things, she just drinks wine day & night, spent 8 days in the Hosp. cause her Liver shut down. But she tells everone it was cause of 'Jaunice'(?), guess dring gallons of wine is better then pills..right. She's back drinking just as much, so she'll end up back in the Hosp. or dead.
So Cindi we have to FIGHT for every medication they want to take away from us, even Asprin. Many of these 'PEOPLE' have no idea what we go threw just to get threw the day. How many times have you been in so much pain you can't bruse your teeth before bed?
I have to get off this computer, before I can't brush my teeth cause I'm in so much pain. I'll talk with you soon, & write my letter, with one arm it will take a few days.Keep fighting. Goodnight, Pegi
