Goodnighties Recovery Sleepwear: A Product Review
Getting a good night's sleep is one of the most important factors in treating fibromyalgia, but it is also one of the most difficult to accomplish. So when I saw a press release for Goodnighties®, a new sleepwear for women that claimed to help improve sleep quality, I was intrigued. The headline indicating that Goodnighties was “for Women Suffering from a 'Broken Internal Thermostat,'” immediately grabbed my attention. I can't tell you how many times I've complained that my body's thermostat was broken. I'm almost always too warm.
Then when I got to this paragraph – “Goodnighties sleepwear is made with revolutionary IonX fabric that is scientifically proven to restore muscles, reduce pain, balance the body and bring relief to women who suffer from the effects of night sweats and hot flashes,” I knew I had to try this product. As always, I was skeptical - but if it lived up to it's claims, it could make a huge difference for women with fibromyalgia and many other chronic pain conditions.
I immediately e-mailed the contact person on the press release who responded by inviting me to be a “jammie tester.” I've been so pleased with the results, I wanted to share my experience with you.
How Goodnighties Work
According to the manufacturers, the secret to Goodnighties lies in the IonX fabric from which they're made. IonX is a patented process that builds negative ions into the structure of the fabric. What possible difference could negative ions make? Apparently quite a bit. If you do a quick study on positive and negative ions, you'll discover that our air is bombarded with positive ions from things like pollution, computers, TVs and fluorescent lights. Positive ions can make us feel tired, irritable and depressed. Negative ions, on the other hand, are found in nature – at the beach, near a waterfall, in the mountains, and after a storm. Negative ions tend to give us a sense of well-being, alleviate depression, reduce stress and increase energy.
When a Negative is Positive
The positive effects of negative ions have been studied for many years. A number of those positive effects may be beneficial to people with fibromyalgia, where the claims include:
- Increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain. (FM patients have decreased oxygen levels in specific areas of the brain.)
- Producing biochemical reactions that increase serotonin levels. (People with FM have lower than normal levels of serotonin.)
- Increasing melatonin, which helps to synchronize our biological clocks.
- Helping us reach the REM stage of sleep more quickly. (People with FM usually awaken just before getting into REM sleep.)
- Increasing blood flow, which promotes pain relief and joint mobility.
- Protecting against germs and boosting the immune system. (Positively charged germs are neutralized by negative ions.)
When I opened the package containing my first pair of Goodnighties, I was anxious to see what the fabric felt like since I am extremely sensitive and most clothing is painful to wear. I was pleased to find that Goodnighties are incredibly soft and comfortable. In fact, not only are they not painful, but they actually feel good on my skin. They also have a four-way stretch so they don't bind when I move around at night.
Prior to trying Goodnighties, I usually managed to get one three or four hour stretch of sleep a night, plus a couple of two-hour segments. The first night I wore my Goodnighties I slept for six hours, woke up long enough to make a trip to the bathroom, then slept for four more hours. I awoke feeling truly refreshed for the first time in many, many years. Also, I didn't wake up hot and sweaty like I usually did. Except for an occasional nap, I haven't slept without wearing my Goodnighties since then.
Another positive effect I've experienced with my Goodnighties is pain relief. A lot of my worst pain tends to be in my low back and left hip. It had been particularly bad for several weeks before I received the Goodnighties. But since wearing them every night, that pain is gone – and it has stayed gone through several long car trips, which would usually cause the pain to flare.
My introduction to Goodnighties couldn't have come at a more perfect time. My first pair of pajamas arrived almost two months ago – just a few days before I had the first of two surgeries. I virtually lived in my Goodnighties throughout my recovery from both surgeries, taking them off only long enough to wash them. At the very least, they made my recovery time more comfortable. But I'm convinced they also helped me heal faster because I was able to rest and sleep better.
Goodnighties Facts and Figures
Styles: Goodnighties sleepwear is available as a gown or pajama separates. The pajamas come in a variety of leg and sleeve lengths. My only complaint is that at this time Goodnighties doesn't make a long gown, which is my personal preference. But I'm hoping they will soon add that to their product line. Their short gown is very short – shorter than I am comfortable wearing as a gown, but it does make a nice tunic-length top. When I spoke to them about the gown length, they told me that they have added another three inches to the length for future manufacturing runs. That is still shorter than I would wear, but I'm sure a lot of other people will like it.
For people with fibromyalgia, the Goodnighties manufacturers recommend the pajamas with the long sleeves and long legs (see picture) to provide the most effective coverage for pain relief. Since I can't stand anything on my arms when I sleep, I opted for the camisole top; and since I'm short, I chose the crop pant bottoms. I've been very happy with both. Everyone is different, though, so if you decide to try Goodnighties, follow your instincts and try whatever style you think you would be most comfortable with. To view all available styles, visit the Goodnighties shop.
Sizes: Goodnighties are available in a wide range of sizes – from XS to 3X. They are true to size, so order the size of pajamas you normally wear. I like my jammies to be really loose and comfortable, so I buy them once size larger than my daytime clothes. You can find their sizing guidelines on the Our Story link on their Web site.
Price: The price of Goodnighties at this time ranges from $23.50 to $55.95 per item, depending upon the style you choose. According to their Web site, these prices reflect a 20% discount. They cost a little more than discount store pjs but less than high-end brands. Although they're a little more expensive than what I usually spend for sleepwear, in my opinion, they're worth every cent. I look at it as an investment in my health. What price would you pay for improved sleep and reduced pain? I've paid more for one month of sleeping medication that didn't really do much to improve the quality of my sleep.
Care: The care of Goodnighties is very simple – machine wash in cold water (no fabric softener) and hang to dry. Because they are so lightweight, they dry very quickly.
Where to Buy: You can order Goodnighties directly from their Web site: Goodnighties.com

I am a highly skeptical person and very protective of the fibromyalgia community – especially when it comes to products that claim to be beneficial for people with fibromyalgia. It is rare that I recommend any kind of product. Goodnighties is one of those rare finds. They have made a significant difference in the quality of my sleep and helped reduce my pain level. I just wish I never had to take them off. Maybe one day they'll develop a line of clothing, too, and I won't have to.
Disclosure: The manufacturers of Goodnighties provided me with a pair of pajamas and a gown for review. I have no other affiliation with the company.
