FDA Voting on Sodium Oxybate for Fibromyalgia

By Karen Lee Richards, Health Guide Sunday, October 03, 2010
A little over a month ago, I told you that an FDA panel had recommended not approving sodium oxybate for fibromyalgia.  On October 11, the FDA will make it's final decision.    Friday I received an Action Alert from the National Fibromyalgia Association asking us to help make the FDA...

Hi Karen,

As a regular reader of your posts I in fact have sent an email, fax, and a snail mail to Ms. Patel.

I have you in my email alerts just for this reason, so that I'll never miss anything concerning advocating and educating on FMS & CFS.

We need options, I am currently having to take two expensive meds for my symptoms and still it's not a complete benifit to my life.

I have to wonder if there is not some gender bias in approving options for the many FMS patients who are the lions share women. If the majority of people who were diagnosed with FMS & CFS were men I believe that not only would many more options were made available but at a much faster rate.

I am not a man hater, I know there will be such replies. I am only a woman who has been waiting for over 25 yrs to have options in how my illness is treated.

Again thank you so much Karen for standing up and bringing the knowledge to us so we may stand up tall with you.

Unfortunately this arrived too late to do anything needed to receive by 10/5 and received it on 10/7

I also received this too late to support the approval of sodium oxybate. I have had great success with rolfing therapy and have reduced my oxycontin by 50%.

Has anyone out there tried this?

OXYCONTIN?!.. for fibro?! If I sound a bit astounded I apologize, but I am because not only do I have severe Fibro so bad I hit myself it hurts so much.. but I also have severe back, pelvis and legs problems.. a total of about 23 diagnosis thus far and all I recieve for pain is the Patch (Duragesic) Vicodin 750 Lyrica (which is a joke) Cymbalta (another joke) along with about 10 other meds and I am in constant round the clock pain still... I have wanted to be upped so badly but my current Dr (whom I owe alot to and admire) won't..he is trying to slowly raise my meds so any eventual withdrawal won't be so bad. The prob is that I have done w/d before and it wasn't too bad at all.. but try w/d off Valium!!! Now THAT is awful. There is soooo much stigma in the Country about overdose/addiction.. blah, blah..

I am just sick of it is all, as I lie here in severe pain yet another day.

I am on oxycontin and oxycodone for quick relief, and have been for 10 years. Lyrica, cymbalta, gaba etc have done little, but if I miss my oxy, I realize how much it does help moderate the pain. When the pain clinic decided that they were only going to treat palliative cancer patients and the rest of us fibro/chronic pain patients were out of luck, I had a physio who suggested rolfing. I admit it is painful when you start, but it has eased the pain and I've been able to cut out a lot of my drugs and reduced the oxy to 60 mg per day from 120. I have been on lorazepam for some time as well, but need it more in the winter when I get truly depressed with the cold and the snow.

hi have not been very active hear lately, My advocacy for Fibromyaligia & CFS and the discovery that the XMRV Retro virus is present in 67% of people so far tested with CFS or ME as it is called everywhere else but the United States but trying to broaden my horizens. I am allergic to all opiods, Recently I was in the hospital due to what they call in simple terms a premature heatbeat and Of course I was in horrible pain as I always am. When i asked for demerol they said my dr would not give it to me,. I am in constant severe pain not just from the fibro but also Spinal stenosis. I don't know what to do any more but living like this with no pain releif is just not the answer, Any ideas, I am on SSI and an HMO mediciad and the nearest Rheumatologist for me to see is an hour away thru the streets no highway which is ridiculous. So have yet to make an apt to see him, Have heard of Rolfing but also know you have to be very very careful. I also have a cervical fusion and had a laminectomy five years ago but still in pain all over,

As a former fibromyalgia sufferer I wondered why this drug was rejected while so many are approved. According to http://www.rxlist.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=119098 Xyrem is chemically similar to GHB, widely considered a date-rape drug. Also visit http://www.drugs.com/xyrem.html for further information.

I, too, received this on the 7th, via the Chronic Pain Newsletter on HealthCentral dated Oct. 6th. I always support the efforts and causes that Karen recommends and it's frustrating that so many of us missed the opportunity to participate in this one. I guess we will just have to cross our fingers and wait and see on this one. :-/
