Karen,
Good info and resources you put together in the article.
What I'd like to see is resources for free Dental care.
This is the care that you can NEVER find for low income persons.
I know you said to contact the Dept of Health & Human svcs.
But they will refer you to the City County Health Dept.
I used to work in the City County Health Dept's Dental Clinic(I'm dental assistant/OR scrub) and they only treat dental patients who are 18 years old and under. So that leaves adult dental patients without care.
My teeth are crumbling due to my Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, the
meds cause xerostomia(dry mouth). Xerostomia sets up the mouth
for bacteria to grow which cause rampant caries.
For this reason you will see chronic pain patients with massive dental
problems. And many of us do not have access to dental care.
Your dental health greatly affects your general health, yet
we cannot get dental care b/c we cannot afford it.
So where do we turn?
I found myself and family without insurance with only a weeks notice after my husband lost his job. Thank you for posting all the helpful organizations. Indiana has a program for low-income, Healthy Indiana Plan, but you have to qualify and be without ins for 6 months. We just were accepted in december. I have to see my doctor every 2 weeks for scripts. When without ins she let me pay for every other visit and helped me find the cheapest way to get whatever I needed. So talk to your doctor and let them know your situation. Also my CVS pharmacist helped to get the lowest price possible for my meds and would match prices from other pharmacies so I could still get all scripts filled there. Dental and Vision have been the hardest to afford and I haven't been able to get any help in these areas. So if anyone has a solution for Dental and Vision please let us know.
Thank you for sharing the solutions you've found. I never thought about asking a pharmacy to match prices. I've been calling around for the lowest prices and going to different pharmacies for certain prescriptions. What a great idea! I'm definitely going to ask now.
I haven't found anything on dental or vision either. If anyone has found help with these, please let us know!
You may qualify for free medication directly from the manufacturer of brand name drugs. (If you're currently using generic, find out what the brand name is.) If you don't know who the manufacturer is, perform an online search to find out and go to their site. They will have a qualification form somewhere on their site. Print out the forms and fill out your portion (financial situation) and take the rest of the form to your doctor to fill out. Your doctor will then fax the forms along with a prescription to the drug manufacturer. If you qualify, they will send up to three months directly to your doctor at a time usually qualifying you for a full year.
