  • As 2010 winds down, I thought this would be a good time to look back and highlight some of the more important chronic-pain related news stories, research projects and information articles I shared with you over the past year. 


    New Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria Proposed
    A new diagnostic criteria for FM has been proposed that would take common symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive problems, as well as pain into consideration. 

    New Pain Patch Receives FDA Approval: Butrans
    This new pain patch is an opioid analgesic that has somewhat less potential for abuse than other opioids yet provides round-the-clock pain reief for moderate to severe chronic pain.

    FDA Says No to New Fibromyalgia Drug – for Now
    This was not good news for FM patients, who were hoping for another treatment option. 

    FDA Pulls Darvon and Darvocet From the Market
    When these 53-year old drugs were suddenly pulled, thousands – perhaps millions – of patients were left without an effective pain reliever. 


    Review Shows Opioids Relieve Chronic Pain With Little Addiction Risk
    A review of 26 clinical studies supports what those of us who have worked in the area of chronic pain have long known – people who take opioids for real chronic pain problems rarely become addicted to them. 

    Promising New Treatment for CRPS/RSD
    it's very difficult to find any kind of treatment that is effective in relieving the intense pain of CRPS/RSD, so this study using intravenous immunoglobin brought some hopeful news.

    Study Shows Opioids Effective for Neuropathic Pain
    In the past, opioids have not been considered to be very effective for neuropathic (nerve) pain, however, this study came to quite a different conclusion.

    Study: Combining Lyrica and Savella Could Significantly Reduce Fibromyalgia Pain
    This results of this study offers another possible treatment option for fibromyalgia patients.

    FDA and NIH Confirm XMRV Link to ME/CFS
    This was tremendously encouraging news for ME/CFS patients, which will hopefully lead to a great deal more research into this mysterious illness that has been ignored for far too long. 

    Fatigue of Fibromyalgia More Severe Than Normal Tiredness
    This study confirms what FM patients have been saying for years – the fatigue of FM is so much more than just being tired.
