Helping One Another Out of Our Ruts: Chronic Pain and Depression

By Karen Lee Richards, Health Guide Wednesday, January 18, 2012
In my New Year's Eve post, Starting a Fresh New Year Despite the Same Old Chronic Pain, I talked about being in a rut and trying to look at various areas of my life from a different perspective.  One new community member who commeted on my post said that, although they had been bedridden for the...

Hi Karen!

This is a great question.  I think hobbies and interests can help distract us from...some of the rough stuff.

Dragonvale?  I have not heard of this one.  I love the word games for the iPad.  Chicktionary, Word Seek HD, and PopWords have become my faves.  Oh and let's ot forget Angry Birds!

I have a secret passion for karaoke.  I actually own a karaoke machine...and I have thousands of songs.

Baking is fun and gardening...playing piano (I have an electronic keyboard), bellydancing, watching movies, collecting old toys, and calligraphy (although my handwriting is so bad right now I doubt if I could do it anymore).

Now I need to find the time to do these things!

Thanks for reminding us of the fun we can still have despite the challenges on our plate.

I love word games on the iPad, too!  Don't have Chicktionary or PopWords.  I'll look for those.  Some of my favorites are Scrabble, Boggle and Wurdle.

Dragonvale is a game where you breed and grow dragons for your dragon park (much like a zoo) which you also design and decorate.  It's played through Game Center and you can invite friends so you can help each other.  It's a fairly new game that's apparently becoming very popular.  In fact, all 8 of my grandchildren – ages 5-16 – play.

Karaoke has always looked like fun but I do not have a good singing voice so I've never tried it.  I love to sing along with songs but never do it where anyone will hear me.  :>)

Thanks for sharing!

I love to paint, sew, knit, my hands needs to be busy . I do make most of my gifts and give to charities, I feel good when a project is finished.. I can't stand doing these brain games. So I try to learn new techniques, complicated ones to make my brain work. Even if sitting is the worst position for me, I found that sitting on a exercise ball helps a lot I have some everywhere I sit in the house even the keyboard, and in my "lazy girl" chair, I say "girl" because I finally found one that fit me smaller than those big deep men chairs. I still dream of perfect chair: a zero gravity chair, not a folding one but the real padded one to $$$ for me I keep an eye open for a real good special. Dream...dream

I have permanent sciatic nerve damage and have found that crocheting is one of my best distractions from the constant severe pain. Counting the stitches keeps me distracted from pain, plus a chance to sit down in the recliner and put my legs and feet up for a rest.

Anything to do w/hands, knit, crochet -- baby blankets or hats for charity.  Breathe and breathe some more, meditate, admit you hate the pain.  Swim, water walk or just paddle around breathing.  It is the best and gets one out of the house where the rut truly exists.

This is a great post and it has really made me think.  I have gotten some good ideas too.  I'm going to check out the Ipad scrabble game.  It sounds fun.  I like to crochet, sew and quilt.  I need to get some projects going.  I also like to treat myself to an occasional movie and there are some good ones coming out in theaters this month.  Note:  I do sneak in my own bottle of water and goodies to the movie to save on $.

Thanks for the reminder.  Lets all get out of our ruts!  :)

I bead - make bracelets, necklaces, and earrings for myself and gifts.  Michael's has great beads.  I knit and paint when my hands are good enough.  I used to sew, but haven't lately.  I also keep a journal when I am down and then go back and read it when I am feeling better and realize how it is never as bad as it seems in the moment.  I also enjoy the many FREE games on the AARP website.  I also have started to put stories from my life onto my computer with the thought that maybe someday I will write a book or play.  I collect recipes (some healthy ones too:-) and plan to organize them in photo albums.
