10 Causes of Fibromyalgia Flares

By Karen Lee Richards, Health Guide Wednesday, March 21, 2012
A fibromyalgia flare (or flare-up) is a temporary increase in the number and/or intensity of symptoms.  Worsening pain and fatigue are generally the first two symptoms noticed in a fibro-flare.  But other symtpoms like poor sleep, increased cognitive dysfunction and digestive disturbances a...

Wow Karen, you have described my flare issues to a T. Having had fibro for nearly 20 years now, I have gotten to be pretty good at avoiding them, but I sure had all of the issues you describe. I have become very proactive in warding off a flare, although as you know, it is sometimes just going to happen. I recently fell down half my indoor stairs, and broke my ankle and got a ton of brusies as well. The ankle had to be surgically repaired, how wonderful, and I spent a night in the hospital with none of my normal meds and on a hard mattress. It was a nightmare. So when I got home, I scooted up the stairs on my fanny and went to bed. I am still spending most of my time in bed, after 7 weeks, and I somehow managed to avoid the flare that I was sure I would have. I do get up and go downstairs, very slowly, but I am healing very well, and don't feel the terrible flare symptoms I feared. I helps that I am disabled, so I didn't have to worry about a job issue and I have a sister who helps out immensly with the house and my animals. But all in all, the bed rest has been a true lifesaver for me. I reccomend it.

I have fibro flares often after having a migraine attack, for which I take sumatriptan.  I ache all over, but particularly in my buttocks.  Interesting, but cause unknown.  I also have flares sometimes with weather changes.  I also am on disability retirement, so don't have to worry about job responsibilities.  I also rest a lot when needed.  I wish I could decrease fatigue and increase energy.

My flareups happen randomly. Sometimes stressing causes it, sometimes it doesnt. Most of the time im relaxing and i just start hurting and the mood swings begin.

Loved this ethical. I was just diagnosed with this and this was a great way to start research on how to handle flair ups.

Actually I can't say for sure whether it's a flare trigger or a flare symptom. but generally anywhere from an hour to up to 12 hours beforehand I get extremely thirsty. I cannot get enough water in me to satisfy the thirst.

have you had your blood sugar tested?  excessive thirst is quite often a symptom of high blood sugar.
