Use Clothespins to Explain Chronic Pain

By Karen Lee Richards, Health Guide Monday, December 10, 2007
Do you have trouble explaining to others what it’s like to live with chronic pain? I think most of us have run into this problem. Even the most caring people who genuinely try to be sympathetic can’t really understand if they’ve never experienced it. But finding a way to explai...

That is much better than what I was trying to explain to people.  I would just tell them...a pinprick for you is like a stabbing to me.....60 degrees for you is like 30 degress for me.

But I like your idea of donating much better.

Thanks, Annette

I recieved this information about the Clothes Pin challenge a couple months ago in my newsletter, I'd forgotten all about it, but know that you've reminded me, I'm going to get my husband, son and his girlfriend to try this over the holidays here.  Who knows, maybe I'll try more of the family too.

Do you think any one finger is better than the others?  I'd like to put them on several fingers myself and that would be more like it for me.  LOL

I'll let you know if any of my chickens here will even give it a try.

Thanks for the minder

Betty

Betty - I don't think it matters which finger is used.  It hurts on any finger, but the bigger the finger, the more intense the pain.  For men with big hands, you may have to use whatever finger it will fit on.

Have fun trying this out over the holidays!  Let me know how it goes. - Karen

LOL, I'm gonna have fun with this alright!Grin

My son is my first victim.  I know he'll ask his father if he's tried it yet, then my husband will wonder what it's all about and he'll be my next victim.

I'm thinking during Sunday football, I'll say something like?   "I've got 20 bucks in my purse, that says you two cannot leave this clothes pin on your finger for 30 minutes and enjoy watching the game.  That will get them both into it.  (((((((Giggle))))))))

I'm so glad you like the idea.  The standard procedure is, you are welcome to post the first paragraph or two – down to "Here's how it works:" – then link to my SharePost for the rest.  Thanks for asking! – Karen

My boyfriend, upon reading this, really wanted to try it.  We don't have any clothespins at home, so we need to buy them.. but he is really excited at the prospect of being able to understand better what I go through every day.   I am so incredibly proud of him for caring this much.

I will let you guys know how it goes!

I have my clothes pins out on the kitchen counter in a baggie marked "clothes pin challenge".  when my son got home today, he saw them laying there and asked me what the clothes pin challenge was and does it have something to do with my pain?

I told him about the challenge and he got a clothes pin out and put it on his finger for a minute, I told him I wanted him to wait for his dad to be home, so they could do it together, so he took it off and said, "I can already tell this is going to be hard"Big Grin

I'm going to give them the wager and pay the winner 20 bucks to see which one can take it the longest.  My husband has a really low pain tolerance and I don't think he will be serious and really get the point unless I give him some competition.

Several years ago, He stubbed his scandal footed toe in Disneyland on Tom Sayers island and nearly passed out, with me standing there holding two little boys crying asking what's wrong with daddy.  His toe did bleed a little bit, but I know he cannot stand any pain and will not be able to stand the clothes pin without some encentive.

He wondered about my tens unit a few years ago, so I put the patches on him and barely turned it on the lowest setting and he freaked out.  It's a good thing that it's me that's in pain, as I don't know what we'd do if it were him.Roll Eyes

I'll let you know how they do

Hello,

I am a 61 year old female who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and osteoartharitis in 1998.  I also have MF CFS but have not been diagnosed and recieve no treatment for it.  For the Fibro I do go to a pain center, 3 1/2 years now, and am on narco, fentenal, soma, celebrex, and fiorinol for the horrible headaches.

My problem is I do not have a doctor who oversees my disease.  I would love to get into a good study but everytime I have tried I was taken off all meds for a month then told I did not qualify for their study.  It is crazy, meanwhile I just go from one flare to another.

I have a primary care that is just so poor that I don't even bother going to her anymore.   What can I do to get some help?

Thank you so much.

Linda

FINALLY! AN IDEA TO SHARE WITH ALL SCEPTICS!  I'VE LIVED WITH FMS SINCE THE EARY 70'S BUT WSN'T DIAGNOSED UNTIL 1983. I WAS MISDIAGNOSED AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHAT THE PAIN I WAS LIVING WITH FELT LIKE!  I PLAN TO USE THIS TECHNIQUE ON EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY AS WELL AS FRIENDS WHO "DON'T GET IT"!
