Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain and the Weather

By Karen Lee Richards, Health Guide Tuesday, December 11, 2007
Do you sometimes feel like a human barometer? Do you experience increased pain whenever the weather changes? If so, you’re not alone. Most people with fibromyalgia and many people with other chronic pain problems report pain flares that coincide with changes in the weather. Often it doesn&r...

Yes I am definitely in this catagory. My mother in law always thought I was a bit crazy I think, until she had a horrible open fracture to her arm.  She now can feel more pain with the barometric pressure changes & tires more easily.  She told me, "I think I broke my arm because God wanted me to understand you better."  I also notice that I do not do well with extreme heat waves too, but that is still a bit better than the cold & damp.  This is a great feature that the weather service is offering & I look forward to trying it out! Thanks for spreading the news. ~kat

The weather channel aches and pains section really works for me! I couldn't believe how accurate it was!

I do believe I experience this phenomenon, but The Weather Channel index never seems to be accurate.  I've never seen it indicate anything but "low".  It's too bad!   Maybe he accurave depends on what part of the country you are in.

I have known for years that the weather affects my pain. I agree with the above comment. TWC Aches & Pains Index is a joke! We are currently in the middle of a severe thunderstorm advisory, stemming from the fringe of Hurricane Fay passing over us. TWC says the humiidty is *dropping*--yep, that's right, dropping humidity when it's pouring rain!--and the Aches & Pains index is set to Low. It's *always* set to low!! A totally useless tool!

In a word USELESS.  I have lived with pain for over 40 years.  I have no way of predicting what will be good days and which will be bad days.  The Weather channel is about the worst I have ever attenpted to use.

I'm not saying that the wather has nothing to do with pain.  Too many peoplecan predict rain or storms.  But there have to be other factors.  Unknown witch either influence or completely change how much you hurt.

One is mental attitude.  You can make pain greater or worse by just thinking about it.

Oh and let us not forget the medical practice ( maybe some day they will stop practicing and start helping)  They don't know beans about chromic pain !!!

Yeah, the Weather channel's website "Aches and Pains" index is utterly worthless for me. It appears that you the author, the weather channel people, and apparently all researchers have never experienced weather related pain, and have absolutely no clue about what causes in, or what can cure it. Knowing it's coming is of little help. We need some good medical research here for something that affects millions of people.
