A study published in the May 22, 2008 issue of the journal Rheumatology International examined serum levels of selenium, zinc and magnesium and how they related to the number of tender points, severity of fatigue and functioning ability of Fibromyalgia patients.
Thirty-two patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia were compared to 32 normal healthy controls. The average age was 42.9 for the FM group and 41.3 for the control group. The Visual Analog Scale was used to estimate the daily severity of their pain and fatigue and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire was used to evaluate their functioning level. All subjects were tested for serum selenium, serum zinc and serum magnesium levels.
The serum levels of zinc and magnesium were significantly lower in the FM group, but there was little difference in the selenium levels of both groups. There was also a meaningful association between zinc levels and the number of tender points, and between magnesium levels and fatigue.
According to the results of the study, the researchers asserted that serum magnesium and zinc levels may play an important role in the pathophysiology of Fibromyalgia.
