Cry I am on 90 mgs of Cymbalta a day for depression.  It does not help my fibromyagia.

6/17/08 1:10pm

I have been depressed and felt the incredible pain of fibro most of my life.  I just started on Cymbalta about 2 months ago and it is like a miracle.  The last week I have not experienced a migraine for 6 days and my depression is slowly lifting.  Sometimes I am scared it is all in my mind...but you know what??  Maybe it is, but all I know is it is working!  I have tried so many different medication combos it would make your mind spin!  I am also bipolar w/anxiety disorder.  Thank you Cymbalta!  Between it and my chiropractor there may be hope after all ~ after over 20 years!

Thanks...  Deb

Reported by the FDA 2 years ago-

Cymbalta has been linked to serious side effects including heart defects and persistent pulmonary hypertension in the newborn (PPHN) when Cymbalta is taken by the mothers during pregnancy.

In July of 2006, the FDA issued a Health Advisory advising people of serious side effects if taking Cymbalta  while pregnant. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that showed mothers who took Cymbalta during the second half of their pregnancy were six times more likely to have a baby with PPHN or heart defects.

Eli Lilly, makers of Cymbalta, have allegedly failed to adequately warn users that birth defects are a possible side effect of taking Cymbalta during pregnancy.

Eli Lilly announced today, February 26, 2007, that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the antidepressant Cymbalta (R) (duloxetine HCl) for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, Cymbalta is known to cause anxiety once side effects begin in roughly 50% of the population.

Cymbalta tends to cause intestinal problems as well as joint pain more often than other Cymbalta side effects while a person is still taking the medication. Much like other antidepressants, Cymbalta causes side effects in the very symptom they are promoted to solve. Hence, Cymbalta joint pain.

People who have taken this-

And if you deside to STOP taking it...WOW-

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Anorexia – No longer having a desire to eat.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Apothous Stomatitis – Painful red and swollen open sores on a mucus membrane of the mouth commonly called a canker sore.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Ataxia – Loss of the ability to move the body with coordination.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Arterial Fibrillation – A condition of abnormal twitching of the muscles in the blood vessels that moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.  The unusual twitching is rapid and irregular and replaces the normal rhythm of contraction of the muscle, which sometimes causes a lack of circulation and pulse.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Blood Cholesterol Increased – An abnormal condition where there is a greater amount in the blood of the oily/fatty substances known as cholesterol.   Cholesterol is a necessary part of living cells (along with proteins and carbohydrates).  Because cholesterol only slightly dissolves in water, it can build up on the walls of the blood vessels, therefore blocking/decreasing the amount of blood flow, which causes blood pressure to go up.  If not corrected, this condition is associated with coronary artery disease.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Blood Creatinine Increased – A greater than normal number of creatinine or muscular chemical waste molecules in the blood.  Creatinine plays a major role in energy production in muscles.  Since creatinine levels are normally maintained by the kidneys, Blood Creatinine Increased is an indicator of kidney malfunction or failure.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Blood in Stool – The blood that is in your bowel movement usually comes from any place along your digestive tract (from your mouth to your anus).  The stool can appear black and foul-smelling (usually from the upper part of your digestive tract) or red or maroon-colored (usually from the large intestine area).  Hemorrhoids are the usual cause for blood in the bowels.

8.    Cymbalta withdrawal - Bundle Branch Block Right – These are specialized cells in the upper right heart chamber and are the heart’s pacemaker.  They send electrical signals to the heart that keeps it beating or contracting regularly.  Normally the signal goes to the lower heart chambers at the same time through the bundle of His (hiss) on both the left and right sides of the heart, so the lower chambers contract at the same time.  When the bundle is damaged on the right side, the signal does not fire at the same time as the left, which changes the pace of blood flow.  This can lead to a person fainting.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Cardiac Failure – A heart disorder where the heart does not function as usual and may completely stop working.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Cardiac Failure Congestive – The body is asking for the heart to supply more blood than it is capable of producing and maintaining.  Normally, a body can tolerate an increased amount of work for quite some time.  The condition is characterized by weakness, shortness of breath, and a fluid build-up in the body tissues causing swelling.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Cold Sweat – The skin is clammy and moist and you feel chilled.  This is a reaction to a shock or pain as well as to fear and nervousness.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Coronary Artery Disease – A condition where the blood vessels that mainly carry the blood away from the heart become clogged up or narrowed usually by fatty deposits.  The first symptom is pain spreading from the upper left body caused by not enough oxygen reaching the heart.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dehydration – An extreme loss of water from the body or the organs of the body as in sickness or not drinking enough fluids.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Diplopia – The condition where a person is looking a one object and instead of normally seeing just the one object he sees two.  This is also call double vision.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Diverticulitis – There are pouches or sacs on the inside of the intestines that look like fingers.  This increases the area for the body to absorb nutrients as they pass through the intestines.  These sacs become irritated and swollen and end up trapping waste that would normally be eliminated, causing pain and constipation.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dysarthria – The inability to control the mouth muscles when forming words so the words are not clearly spoken and heard.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dyslipidemia – The normal fat metabolism in the blood is interfered with.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Dysphagia – Trouble swallowing or the inability to swallow.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Ecchymosis – When a blood vessel breaks and creates a purple discoloration of the skin.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Edema – An abnormal build up of excess fluids in the cells, tissues, and the spaces between the tissues creating swelling.

  1. Cymbalta withdrawal - Edema Peripheral – The abnormal build up of fluids in the tissues of the ankles and legs causing painless swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet.  If you squeeze the swollen area it leaves an indentation on the skin for a few minutes.

On Cymbalta I had full blown halluciantions, confusion of thought, short term memory loss, inability to put together a cohesive sentence. Was only on this monster for under 2 weeks, bad symtoms went on for another residule 2 weeks. Was not found to be allergic, this is just what can happen, that you are not warned about. Opinion: stay far away from this med. or risk going through hellish experience I had.

very sincerely, jhonni

2 seperate chronic pain problems, still unresolved

However, if you are like me, I take both Lyrica & Cymbalta, and the recommended dosage of 60mg daily of Cymbalta does not work. I have to take 120mg daily of Cymbalta and have been fighting the drug co. for about 3 months now to get them to understand that this is the dosage the dr. wants me on for the best help.

Thanks so much for your detailed post on Cybalta. My Neuro has had me on 60mg twice a day for the last three years for both depression and fibromyalgia. I started on a lower dose and worked up slowly. It works like a dream, and it is almost like I don't have fibro, unless I do something very strenuous.  I have had severe fibromyalgia for 14 years. I am pleased to see the FDA has finally been approved for this use.

My doctor had me try Lyrica and I had a bad reaction to it, but understand it works for others. We are still working, with increasing success, on the management of my Migraines.  Clearly finding relief from your fibromyalgia and other sources of chronic pain help!

Have been on Cymbalta for years. Just upped my doseage from 60 to 90 ml a day. It helps me tremendously with depression, but has not been an advantage over the pain of the Fibro. Just switched from hydrocodone to oxycodone, but something is triggering higher pain levels, maybe the heat and humidity here in the midwest. Fortunately, our farm was not flooded, but crops have been replanted due to wet soil. Can't control my thermostat and pain at this point. I should be packed and ready for a trip to TX, but can hardly breathe, much less clean and pack. I hope it helps other Fibro sufferers though. Smile and build an ARK.

was given this drug early in my spinal pain treatment, made me crazy, saw things that were not visible to others, talked out loud to myself without realizing this, crying in public over "nothing". even though on it for short time, doc took me off immediately, after 2 weeks, there was long lingering effects. took about a month afterwards to get my normal brain back. scary stuff, I don't recommend it.

I saw my general practioner today and they said I should do a commercial for cymbalta. After 26 years or trying all kinds of things Cymbalta has given me my life back. I have been on Lyrica and while it helped with sleep it did nothing for the other problems that FMS brings including the pain. Everyone has noticed a remarkable difference in me. I even have my sense of humor back. I'm gardening, painting my nails (finger and toes) doing my hair and makeup. I gave that up ages ago because it was just to painful to do or to stand in front of a mirror.

I did have to get past the side effects and that took 3 1/2 weeks for me. Thank goodness the knitting group I belong to (all with FMS and all that comes with it), encouraged me and told me don't give up you will be happy you stayed with it. They were right. Thank you Cymbalta and if you want a commercial I'm game. ha

I'm so happy for you!  It's always encouraging to hear a success story.  I'm also glad to know that the side effects eventually improved as well.  Thank you so much for sharing. – Karen

12/14/10 10:10am

Having had depression for mostly 20 years, I've tried several meds.  I have been on Cymbalta for 10 of those years. That is the only thing that has worked for me.  I also tried not to take my anxiety meds and decrease my cymbalta, as I was listening to a x-boyfriend that sais all I needed was exercise and I would be fine.  WOW---did I find out quickly that I needed it!!!  when off of all meds it sent me into a huge spiral.  Without that and major things in my life,  I ended up in the psych ward for 6 weeks and outpatient for 5 weeks with a wide variety of people.  Talking to a variety of different people,  I saw that everyone has a different chemical makeup and different drugs react different on different people and EVERY drug you take has side affects,  but if you don't take your meds it has SERIOUS side affects as well. I was diagnosed with OCD and borderline personality disorder,  some bipolar traits.  Now,  I was a professional for 20 years, as a physical therapist asst.  But the world came crashing down this year!

I am on 60 mg cymbalta, 5 mg abilify, and 150 mg of lamatril.  this seems to work well for me.   So to everyone----It takes a while to find something to work,  but please don't give up.

Please do not be fooled by the hype of this medication helping with pain.  In order for it to successfully work, it needs to be taken in very high dosages 120 mgs per day which for some people is too high of a dose to tolerate.  In addition, dr's do not do the maintenance required such as blood work to monitor liver function as Cymbalta can cause liver damage.  As well, if you do experience the horrible side effects which can be the opposite of what you are trying to achieve wheening yourself off of this medication is worse than one wheening themselves off of alcohol....Please be your own advocate while on this medication and use with precaution...make sure you are not fooled by what the makers want you to believe and make sure your dr is monitoring your blood and other vital functions!!!!
