Milnaciprin under FDA Review Process

By Karen Lee Richards, Health Guide Monday, September 29, 2008
I've been watching a medication called milnaciprin for several years as it's made its way through numerous clinical trials in its quest to be approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia.  Milnaciprin is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI).  Although it is approved in m...

I saw the Lyrica commercial for the first time about 2 weeks ago and could believe how legitimate I all of a sudden felt.  I know it's real, my family and friends know it's real, but having meds for the thing being hawked on TV made me feel like a weight had been lifted.  Progress - yay!

Thanks Karen for the heads up on this med.  It sounds like it is a good aid for fibro.  Maybe more so than Lyrica.  I hope it goes thru and I can try it if possible.  I did not respond to Cymbalta or Lyrica for fibro pain.

I enjoy your columns and look forward to more.......

This is exciting news. I used cymbalta for over 2 years with good results as far as decreased pain but recently tapered off it because of a side effect I no longer want to deal with. I've thought about the lyrica but have heard from several people that they've gained weight from it. I'm finally losing excess weight I've been carrying around for way to long and don't want to take the risk.

Thanks for updating us Karen!

We don't have any ads on tv here in Canada about FM but I have seen the ones in the US thanks to my satellite dish. It is very refreshing to see awareness out there like that.

Hopefully this new drug will be approved soon. It's wonderful to have more options out there for us.

Hugs!

Greetings everyone,

I have been o lyrica for some months now. It has certainly helped me to do more activities. My only draw back is that it is not on the Australian government discount. My Doctor has been giving me samples so I can only remain on this drug whilst he supplies me because it is so expensive per month. Last month cymbalta was aprroves and on the government assistance program. It works!!! It has improved my energy levels triple fold. In fact I had to move house and I could even keep it together longer. Mind you I was still in pain and having the normal fibro exhaustion and pain but without these two drugs I would be on the lounge 24 hours 7 days a week. Great to hear about Milnaciprin too.

I have had fibro/chronic fatigue for  years 94 was my official diagnosis but had it before then.  I do not know about his new drug but it sure sounds like effexor it has the same chemical makeup and is an antidepressant. Effexor --- Which just put me thru hell on a one way ticket.  I mean HELL.  Mania unnoticed insane sexual acting out.  It poops out-means it  stops working and when it does withdrawal symptoms start when that went down I was so sick I coulldn't lift my head.  Chronic lung and kidney infection gerd (acide reflux severe) excessive bleeding vaginal gastro bleed (keep an eye on your teeth if they start bleeding get off the drug before other body parts go)  Vomitting - food would not go down and up came yellow slime this went on for years because doctors do not recognise the side effects which are the same as withdrawal when the drug stops working due to tolerance.  There is way too much to post it all here there is a website call effexoractivists.com another that helps with withdrawal called paxiprogress.org

If you are thinking of taking thes drug or any other like it please take a look at these formus.  I wish I had as it would have saved me a world of hurt.  Nobody told me I am trying to warn you.  Fibro is bad enuff you do not need to add to your pain it is lunacy.  It will make you feel better in the beginning but it is because it is forcing your adenalin gland into over drive later you will have andrenal fatigue and eventually withdrawal......

I feel bad for Sandy.  Sounds like her only hope is medical marijuana with no bad side effects.  If you live in a state that lets your physician prescribe it, go for it!  I totally feel for you, as I experienced bad effects from the same drugs you describe. J. Doe

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia @20 yrs. ago and have tried every anti-depressant, muscle relaxer and was hooked on prescription oxycodone for years.

Coming off that was a horrible experience.  When will the FDA and the medical association realize that we already have a natural painkiller in the form of medical marijuana?  What are they so afraid of?  One can even be prescribed a synethic form of marijuana for pain.  I had so many GI and CNS side effects that I had to quit my job.  I refuse to live off the American taxpayers by filing for disability!  I am a registered nurse and have given synthetic marijuana for nausea and general "well-being" to teens with cancer.  Marijuana is the only thing that works without all the horrible side effects of prescribed anti-anxiety, anti-depressants and even Lyrica and Cymbalta.  I waited fo years for Lyrica to be approved by the FDA and then had my hopes dashed by the horrific side effects.  I force myself to exercise, eat organic food only but some days I have to lay around because of the widespread pain I experience.  My husband and I have been thinking of moving to one of the 14 states that allow medical marijuana with a physician's prescription.  When I do smoke marijuana once or twice daily in the evening, I get a restful nights sleep, my pain is almost 100% relieved and my muscles don't scream with pain the next day.  So, should I continue to "break the law" and continue using?  Our country needs to wake up, follow the rest of the 14 states and have sympathy for chronic pain sufferers.  The FDA and the AMA make too much money off the crappy drugs they prescribe to chronic pain sufferers.  Then, when we are addicted to these drugs, they persecute us for being on them when they decide they can no longer prescribe them?  Who agrees with me?  Shall I risk going to jail because of marijuana use for pain?  I have been able to come of anti-depressants, muscle relaxers and anti-seizure meds and anti-psychotic meds that physicians prescribed for me for years!  Two years ago I kicked the oxycodone I was prescribed because we moved and the new physician would not prescribe them.  I came off them and had a seizure doing so. Our country needs to decriminalize marijuana usage for pain control and the illnesses that it treats naturally.  They need to spend the money they use finding and jailing "criminals that use marijuana."  They should spend that money trying to fix the meth epidemic, cocaine and heroin problem and open treatment clinics for addicts.  Also I believe they should incluce counseling for drug addicts addicted to meth, heroin and cocaine.  Some say marijuana is a "gateway" drug.  Alcohol and cigarettes are the gateway drugs.  Alcohol is the worst offender and look what it does to our society.  DUI's are on the increase and how many people die each year from alcohol related deaths?

Who agrees with me?  Jane,  Florida
