New Years Resolutions and Chronic Pain

In yesterday's SharePost on New Year's Resolutions, I promised that today I would share my personal reflections on 2008 and resolutions for 2009 with you.  As a general rule, I don't make New Year's resolutions.  Although I tend to be a goal-oriented person, I prefer to set my goals whene...

KAREN I AM SO PROUD OF YOU.I HAVE SOME GOALS ALSO.BUT THE FIRST THING IS GETTING A DOCTOR TO ACTAULLY WRITE DOWN OR VERBALLY DIAGNOSE ME FOR WHAT I AM SURE THAT I HAVE.I HAVE SPENT THE BETTER PART OF 2 YEARS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH THIS.IT IS FAR TOO CONFUSING TO EVEN START TALKING ABOUT IT.SO I WILL JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT.IT IS WONDERFUL TO HEAR ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE'S VICTORIES OVER PAIN.OR OVER PAINFULL SITUATIONS.KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.I HOPE THAT THIS YEAR I WILL BE FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE SO THAT I TOO MAY BEGIN MAKING CHANGES.I CANNOT DO SO UNLESS A DOCTOR WILL DIAGNOSE WHAT I HAVE.BUT WITH YOU AND ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE ON THIS SITE.I HAVE FOUND THAT I HAVE SO MUCH MORE POWER NOW.YOU ALL HAVE GIVEN ME THE KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR PAST EXPERIANCES.SO THAT I MAY NOT FALL INTO THE SAME SET OF PROBLEMS THAT YOU HAVE.I HOPE THAT I ALSO HAVE HELPED OTHERS EVEN IF I JUST TELL THEM I AM HERE TO LISTEN IF THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED.WE ALL ARE MORTAL.BUT SOME OF US ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO FLY THROUGH LIFE WITH BLESSED HEALTH AND MONITARY BENEFITS.WHILE OTHERS LIVE A LIFE OF EXCRUTIATING PAIN AND HAVE NO MONEY TO FIGHT OUR BATTLES.OR PAY FOR OUR MEDICATIONS.I AM IN AGREEMENT THAT RESOLUTIONS ARE NOT JUST FOR NEW YEARS.IT IS FOR NEW PROBLEMS OR SOLUTIONS OR NEW SITUATUIONS.I AM SO PROUD OF YOU AND FOR YOU.I WANT TO THANK YOU AND EVERY MEMBER ON THIS SITE.WITH ALL MY HEART I WISH YOU AND EACH PERSON A PAIN FREE LIFE.JO

Why not pick up a 'topic' or 'subject' indexed pocket book of bible verses?  Peruse it a little each day till something strikes you as relevant to your life.  I subscribe to a few of the ministries/pastor's daily/weekly emails from OnePlace.com; you can listen (or read) short, helpful, relevant messages (daily or archived by title/topic/theme) by some of the featured ministries, and then try a few of the daily emails that always begin with a bible verse.  You can even use this website in order to search among 100's of ministries & pastors' messages for answers, encouragement, or inspiration relevent to questions, discouragement, and problems or challenges you are faced with on any given day/week/month/year...  it has been priceless to me, my health problems & recovery, and to my family as a whole this past couple years.  It is a valuable resource, and it is one more thing that YOU can use & do as an individual striving to take control of your health using a more HOLISTIC (e.g., mind, body, & spirit) approach.  Studies show that those who are more spiritual & use prayer regularly are more positive and make better, stronger, faster recoveries from illnesses and life threatening conditions.  For some, this just makes too much sense, and for many it is an easy thing to do; however, for some-- it takes a rather serious or life threatening diagnosis, even a near death experience, in order to seek spiritual guidance & inspiration.  However, if we are comprised of a mind, a body, and a spirit -- doesn't it just make sense to nourish all three; I mean, ignore or deprive one of those apsects of our being and isn't the result illness, imbalance, problems, suffering, etc.???  IN that case, what does any of us have to lose?  It just takes an ounce of humility and then an ounce of effort in order to make a move in the direction of 'choosing life' --whether it be via improved nutrition, knowledge & information for our minds/brains, and inspiration/prayer/hope plus a bible verse every day to keep all three norurished & in balance.

I agree with you completely.  I rely on prayer and Scripture on a daily basis.  I maybe didn't explain myself very well.  The verses I referred to that I sometimes get around the first of the year are unique and different than my usual devotions or studies.  It's hard to describe, but they just kind of jump out at me when I'm not expecting or looking for them.  And they're generally things the Lord teaches me or develops in my life over the next year.  But you're right – it's the daily relationship with Him that keeps me going and gives me joy and hope.

Thank you for sharing the resource you found for spiritual encouragement and inspiration.  I'll definitely check it out.

I understood your feelings about something striking you and getting your attention.  God always knows and will place us where he wants us and some of us listen while it takes a little while for others.  He has placed me in places and jobs that I said I would never do(was an RN) and after getting the message it was a beautiful experience for me and many others.  Sometimes we hear the whispers of our Lord and at others it needs to be shouted in our ear.  Take care and have a blessed and happy time.  Marti

Everyone needs a kick in the head sometimes, but whew.  Your A1c changes are incredible, and I'm glad you're doing so well.  Sometimes (and often with us) life seems like one *#&@ thing after another, but you've risen to this challenge and I admire your steadfast effort.  I am convinced that God(dess) wants us to live and be happy, and by doing this you're spitting in evil's eye.  You go, girl!

I have had those experiences many times, Karen.  I am so glad that you acted on how you felt.  I know that with the bible the meanings can be confusing.  It seems to be different for each person.  If the meaning pops up with the verse, I have always taken action and been very glad that I did so.

I love the thought that you might leave something behind that would help others.  Also agree with you about New Year's resolutions.  My resolutions based only on the change of the year just don't last.

Thank you for sharing your life with others.

I enjoyed your wordsnfor this article.  I too have been feeling the need to write a book about chronic pain issues.  The sad, wonderful, terrifying, maddening break and build up your heart and faith wriing.  I know that is contradictions all over the place but so too can this experience be with chronic pain.  There should be some help centers around the country that help guide people through this ordeal.  I have helped some and have received it also so I know it can be a mentally and physically tiring journey.  Hope you have a blessed day and year.   Marti
