They may have suspected the pain sensitivity thing before (or why else would they be doing the study?), but this is clearly the first time they've had verifiable scientific proof. I've always heard you should taper off opioids but that was because of withdrawal, not becasue it increased pain sensitivity. Thanks for keeping us updated. Don't let the turkeys get you down.

Tapering off medications.
MiseryLovesCompany
Friday, July 17, 2009 at 03:11 AMAt the time, due to the mail order mix up dates in St. Louis, my pkg was supposed to arrive in Feb.
Long story short, I ran out of medication in Mar. had to go cold turkey regarding medication. Good thing I had a couple of bottle of irish cream, it got me by but thats the last thing I wanted to do.
The dr wouldn't refill my meds at the parmacy, the faxs were coming back unreadable and all I could do was lay in bed, and sleep.
It was pure hell.
What happend was, I found out how badly my body has been damanged through the years from falling, car accidents, seizures, so many more things.
However, even though I now have my regular dosage of medications back on track, I'm unable to get to the deepest level of pain relief as before....something I don't understand.
If any of this makes sense to you, please write back.
and thanks for listening to me rattle on.

Friday, July 17, 2009 at 07:53 AMWhat you said does make sense. From what this new research has found, it sounds like the withdrawal you went through probably increased your sensitivity to pain. That's why even though you're taking the same medications as before, you're not getting the same degree of relief. I suspect you'll eventually get back to where you were, but it will probably take quite a while.

Friday, July 17, 2009 at 09:27 AMhi, i had the same thing happen to me, i had to wait days for my mrdication, i went thru hell, and finally after the pharmisit got to reading the fax, i recieved my meds. i called the dr. that prescribed them and he said from then on to CALL him and then TELL the pharmisit to CALL him....haven't had any probs since then..knock on wood!!!...amd the idea of drinking your oain away, well guees what DID the same thing,,,and with the ban coming up, concerning vicodin and percocet, don't you think we are going to have so many more people "turning to the bottle" so to speak, what a shame..because we could THEN have people turning into alcoholics and what is the FDA going to do then??? it is just a horrible outlook, when and if they DO ban these meds....best of luck to you and i hope your pain gets better? wrong word?..but i hope your pain meds start to help you. as they did before, cindi

Friday, July 17, 2009 at 03:23 PMhi, if you have read some of these posts, which i am sure you have, there HAVE been some people who lost love ones to suicide because oof thier pain, and you are so right, it;s true, that there isn't more suicides...how tragic...because a dr, can not understand someones pain, and is ""looking" or "wondering if someone is a drug seeker. i am ashamed to admit, on one of my reaal bad days, about a year aago, i dumped my pain meds on my bed and thought for a second or 2, how it would be, to be finally out of pain...i quickly thought about my 4 children, mt husband and my new and only grandson and put them away and have not done this again...my mom who passed alittle over 2 years ago from cancer....and i lost my daddy 6 months later after he put a gun to his head...he had rhiemotoid arthritis and in terrible pain and my mom basically did everything for him...sorry
, i have tears runningg down my face to think i could ever have thought about doing, what i thought about doing...and thinking how i felt after my daddy did what he did....its just too painful to even think about....cindiSensitivity

Tuesday, September 01, 2009 at 02:37 AMIt was news to me about how the sensitivity can be hightened after being off pain meds
cold turkey or tapering.
This afternoon visiting an uncle in the nursing home, my inside upper arm felt like it had a fire burn on it. So tender and hurt to the touch.
I want to thank everyone that wrote back, my appreciation goes far beyond anything I could put in print.
Thanks again.

Friday, July 17, 2009 at 12:40 PMHey there everyone,
I've taken Tramadol for 12 years now and it's the only thing that cuts my pain from Fibromyalgia and Arthritis. I had knee surgery in 2007 and turned down their Hydocodone for the Tramadol.
I guess I'm pretty lucky in that I understand Tramadol usually doesn't work this long for pain. I take a minimum of 3 50mg tablets a day, one in the afternoon and 2 at night to help me sleep along with the antidepressant I take to help me sleep. My body will reject anymore than that. I will literally get sick if I take more than the 3 tablets a day. I guess I have a built in anti-abuse mechanisim. I never run out because my doctor, who is a pain-management specialist, keeps track and renews my script like clock work. I have tried all the over the counter stuff and I've even tried prescription stuff also and nothing works for me but the Tramadol. When I have tried other medications (a long time ago) they had the opposit effect on me. If it was suppose to take the pain away it made it worse, if it was suppose to put me to sleep it kept me awake. Trust me I think I have tried just about everything that has come down the pipeline and none of it has worked like the Tramadol. If it gets bumped off the market then I'm screwed.

Friday, July 17, 2009 at 03:44 PMYou and me both! I've been taking tramadol for fibromyalgia pain for well over 10 years and it has continued to work well for me. I haven't even been tempted to try any of the new medications for FM. As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." As long as the tramadol continues to work for me, I have no interest in trying anything else.

Quitting opiods cold turkey!! BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bill
Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 06:13 AMi Karen It is Bill here and as many people know I quit cold turkey from 130 mg of methadone and it was 3 years ago and I TOTALLY DISAGREE with this method as I went through 6 months of the worst withdrawal ever!!! I am now on only 30 mg of oxycodone and 6 mg of klonopin a day and I have a decent quality of life now and
it is VERY DANGEROUS to stop COLD Turkey as I have seen people die from this absurd method of getting off of medications that they obviously need!!! Take Care
Any questions feel free to write back ! Thanks' Bill

Monday, July 27, 2009 at 01:10 AMHi Bill – Thanks for sharing your experience. I've heard that methadone is a particularly difficult medication to get off of.
I agree with you. Quitting cold turkey may be a good way to quit smoking, but it's a very bad, and potentially dangerous, way to get off of opioids – especially when you have chroic pain problems.
I'm glad to hear you have medication that works better for you now. Take care. – Karen

This has been standard practice of pain management in the U.S. for years. I have been in pain management for over 5 years and that was discussed as SOP. This is presented as brand new information and sadly, it is just rehashed information. Even worse, it is rehashed form years ago. BTW, the Titanic sank, very few survivors.
