For the past few months, since my TMJ has gotten worse, I have been seeing stars in front of my eyes.  I have had a CAT scan, and I saw a nuerologist. My brain is normal.

I was just wondring if anyone else sees these?

The worse the tmj gets the more problems I have had. I had my jaws look up and had to force them open again. My jaws snap shut with out warning. When is snap shut it catches my tongue or my inner mouth in it path and it hurts like h***. I had to have an MRI to find out that I had ms. there was nerve damage cause by the tmj the ms made worse. Don't give up. There is exercise you can do to help the tmj. you can use ice packs or a blow dryer for heat if needed. Ask if they can recommend you to a thy. Good luck and God bless you.

I do not have tmj however I had the same thing happen with stars or silver dots streaking all across my line of vision.  Then my periferal vision started closing in, getting darker & continuing until I was completely blind.  It would go away but I was terrified that I was going blind.  I then found out that this was a "prodromol" symptom of an impending migraine.  I had no idea at the time that my vision problems were related to the horrid headache I would get 20-30 minutes later.  I am wondering if your tmj pain is causing the same type of problem for you?  Worth checking with a regular doctor about I suppose, maybe they can give you migraine medicine that would help. -wishing you well.

I'm wondering just how far it has progressed for you.  I mean, have you had surgery? If so, what kind of surgery..(ies)? What therapies have been tried on you?  I have had TMJ problems and went through multiple surgeries for the past 19 1/2 years and, yes, I DO have those same sort of symptoms.  I've had these problems for YEARS and have had all sorts of scans and other tests to find out that everything was, pretty-much, normal.  According to the neuro, the only different thing was that my eeg was "slow on the uptake" and is probably related to TMJ problems.

A lot of us with TMJ D&D end up with MANY other, seemingly unrelated, symptoms and illnesses.. all brought on by the TMJ Dx or Illness, itself.   We can end up with Fibro, IBS, CFS, migraines, many others too numerus to count or list!  So, yeah.  It's kind of normal with this thing;  but, of course I do not mean that this is normal.. it's yet another symptom that, in my case and that of many others, has gone hand-in-hand.

IF things change or, especially, get worse or odder, make sure to see your doc, as none of us ARE doctors, for sure!

Good luck with it.  Anne

Hi Raven,

I have TMJ but have not had the problems with my vision like you describe with yours. My TMJ is not very bad though. I wear a splint at night when I sleep and that helps my joints relax throughout the next day.

When you see these stars do you get a headache with them as well? Many people have this happen when they get a migraine. If that is the case, I would go  back to see your doctor. There are a lot of great treatments out there for migraines.

Good luck to you!

I have had TMJ for a few years now and the first symptom i noticed was these auras in my vision. The auras went away and now i see stars pretty much only when its really bright outside or when i look into the sky. I am seeing a nueromuscular dentist now who is making a splint to lower my jaw...i've talked to people who have have this and the TMJ and all symptoms have completely gone away. I too had a brain MRI, cat scan, eye exam, hearing exam, stress test, EKG, pretty much every test possible and everything came back completely normal. I finally got x-rays of my jaw and it revealed my lower jaw protruding into my ear canal. Anyways i feel your pain and there is a cure!

I myself have suffered from TMJ since I was a child.  Have you considered going to an osteopathic doctor (DO)?  There are manipulations for the bones in your head that can possibly alleviate some of your symptoms and DO's are trained to use these.  TMJ involves the temporal bone in your head and the mandibular bone in your jaw- and it is possible to manipulate these bones, similar to the way that a chiropractor manipulates the bones in your back.  You would need to find an osteopath in your area that currently uses manipulations in their every day practice.  In case you didn't know, DO's are physicians with the same training as the doctor with the MD after their name that most people are more familiar with, but with the extra training in manipulation of the body.  If you are at the end of your rope with regards to treatment for your condition, this is definately worth investigating.  Good luck!
