Is anyone or has anyone had their jaw joints replaced(tmj concepts) and upper jaw moved forward for sleep apnea?  Both these surgeries are done at the same time!!!

I'm having it done next week 8-2-07.  Any one that can share their experience with me?

Thanks

Hey, YES:  I had bothof my jaw joints removed (well, it was ribs from a prior, bad, attempt at replacing my joints..; really bad), along with upper and lower orthognathic surgeries and a stair-step chin implant done, ALL at the same time.  My guy also did an unauthorised nose job, too;  yes, after I had told him I refused it.

Now, I DID have my joints replaced with TMJI (Christensen) joints as Concepts may have been a concept at the time but they weren't in business as of yet.  I believe that Dave Samson (and don't quote me on this, but I KNOW I was told this by different docs) was working at TMJI back then, too.  Also, I had the STOCK joints done as there were VERY few pt-specific joints being made by Dr. Bob of TMJI... this came a few years later, that everyone had or has pt-spec.  joints you're talking about.  I'm on my way, today and finally, to see the new surgeon and had to travel nearly 3,000 miles in order to do so.  Also, I had to wait over 13 years to find someone to fix the mess which has become my tmj's.  After I see the surgeon,I'll have SOME time and, after the joints are removed, I should have more.  I'll be bringing my laptop to the hospital and can let you know what goes on with this.  Also, you can email or i.m. me at:  annebeckett@peoplepc.com .

Hey, I'm also wondering, where are you having these surgeries done?  If it was me to do all over again, I think I'd do the tmj stuff first and go back in for ogs (soon) after.., but, this is only my opinion.

My joints will not be ready for some time.. between 2 and 5 weeks, so I'll be wired and without jaw-joints for a while.  It may be much easier for me to get online than on the phone...  Let me know ANYTHING you were wondering about, ok?  NO question is too silly or stupid...

Hey, by the way..

we're BOTH about the same amount of time now, s/post surgery.  Personally, they ONLY removed my joints and SOME of the bone.  And, in my case (according to Dr. Bob Christensen and a couple of other oms's), this was really the ONLY route to go-- for me.  I had already lost SO MUCH bone.  But, you were certainly right;  they DO DO the removal and replacement at the same time, in CERTAIN cases.   --really hope this double (well, quadruple) surgery plan is best for you!  Me?  well, I'm WAITING for the scanning place to send to TMJI my pics (numbering a total of 695) in order that the joints CAN be made specific to what I've got in there.

I DID end up with bone-cement and it burns like crap!  Hon, I HOPE you have not had to have any of that stuff put into you!  I am considering looking into having someone here, in TX, remove that stuff as I am not able to heal, whatsoever, with it in there!  Add to this;  the second surgeon I saw up at Harvard has complained about the amount of "diseased" bone left in my head...;  I may have to have YET ANOTHER surgery to get rid of it before the joints are made.  Stinks, huh?

Anyway, LET ME KNOW how you are!  Sorry I doubted the validity of the all-in-one surgery;  I was not doubting you...  was, for sure, doubting the validity of the process.  But, your situation, I'm SURE is MUCH different than mine!

Hope you're healing and getting better.. or,that they have you on reasonable pain meds, for sure!  That's ONE thing I would say that Dr. W. is good at!  Anne
