i am considering MBSR as an alternaitive treatment for 20 years of chronic pain from 3 cervical surgeries...currently domino affect with multiple herniations,bulges,stenosis,osteopyhtes,etc....i need something to add to my current bag of tricks to struggle through every day at a level 8 (+) level....there is a mindfullness center of n.j. near where i live.. i would love to hear from anyone who has integrated this technique into their chronic pain program with positive results ...thanks

I have tried many diffferent alternative medicenes and have over the past 3 months been diligenlty exercising everyday..I use meditation and a small amount of yoga in my exercises with the Glider and ab lounger all low impact..
My back lineup top to bottom-litterally is herniated discs, a vertebra slipped over another, so many bony spurs that my pain specialist cannot get a needle very easily into my lower spine..I also have Fibromyalgia which always kicks pain levels up with arthrititis ..After a fall I had in Oct. 09 at work my pain level and problems have increased significantly..
Even though I have all the above problems and a few more-I still exercise-each day..I believe if I don't move I wouldn't be able to in a short time..Exercise and quieting of the mind and body for a short time feels good..With enforcing the yoga and meditation throughout the day and especially with my exercise regime to me it helps..I hurt like the dickens later for the stretching and pain level is constant between a 7-8..Still I prefer the above than to another surgery..
So in a round about way Yes-I can see how MBSR works..I don't know though if I could handle doing martial arts-yet-it's something I haven't tried and very well might on a better day..
I wish yo best of luck and hope that you at least try the MBSR-at this point what do you have to lose? k
THANK YOU FOR COMMENTING ON MY SITUATION....I SPOKE ON THE PHONE WITH THE MBSR PSYCHOLOGIST FOR AN HOUR AND DEFINITLY GOT A FEELING OF "COMFORT AND TRUST"....I'M SEEING HER ON MONDAY AND I'M GOING WITH A VERY POSITIVE ATTITUDE...I ALSO RELIGIOUSLY EXCECISE EVERYDAY WITH THE SAME THOUGHTS ABOUT IT AS YOU HAVE ...IT'S A MUST!!! OUR SITUATIONS...MULTPLE HERNIATIONS,BULGING DISCS, MULTIPLE LARGE OSTEOPHYTES , STENOSIS AND MORE ARE CERVICAL FOR ME AND BACK FOR YOU

I am glad you are going..I believe it will help..I guess I forgot to mention the cervical as the lower back right now is worse..Sometimes hard to differntiate what hurts worse as most doctors want to know..I did have surgery in my neck and the disc above now they say needs surgery so I have constant headaches that come very fast then go away and back..I was told the headaches is something they couldn't help..oh yeh..:^) Best wishes..
the headaches are "occipital neuralgia" from C-2/C-3 and C-2 up to the occipate (where the spinal cord meets the skull) i need surgery at that level but there are not too many good surgeons willing to do it since my vertebral artery is twisted around the spine and if you knick it by mistake you only have minutes to repair it or it's all over....that's why we have to "live with it"
