I have no experience with this, but I did some research and apparently tuberculosis can affect the bones and joints.  It occurs more frequently in children, but can also strike adults.  Don't jump to any conclusions, but if you are concerned, ask your doctor to check it out.  It is treatable with medication.

For bone tuberculosis, the diagnosis usually begins with an X-ray. Once the clinician suspects TB, he aspirates the joint and sends it for microbiological investigation to identify the causative agent - Mycobacterium tuberculosis.  Patients with tuberculosis usually have a raised ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate).

According to Dr. Irma West of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society, the bovine strain of TB is more likely to cause scrofula and bone disease than the human strain.  The incidence of this was drastically reduced with the pasturization of milk.
