    Yes, unfortunately OxyContin is a drug that is often abused, however, most of the time it is abused by people who are looking for a high and do not actually have a chronic pain problem.  While abuse by a pain patient can occur, it is the exception rather than the rule.  If someone tends to have a problem with addiction, then OxyContin or any other opioid is probably not the best pain relief option for them. 

     

    When it comes to opioids like OxyContin, it's important to understand the difference between addiction and dependence.  Opioids used on a regular basis will always result in a physical dependence, even when used appropriately.  But that is very different from addiction.  If you'd like to learn more about this difference, please read:  Opioids:  Addiction vs. Dependence.

    Ya know Karen you are exactly right. The people that I knew said they had chronic pain but I came to find out that they were addicts and wanted the high. How sad! I didn't mean to offend anyone out there that suffers from chronic pain. Embarassed
