After a car accident and being on my back for most of two years with
back pain and nerve pain into my toes, I started volunteeringat a
nursing home a block from my home in San Francisco. I met, talked
and read to nursing home residents for two months when I decided
that I should return to school for my master's in gerontology, even
though I wasn't able to sit for more than an hour a time.
It was during my fifth year of studies, that I came to the realization that
I had a disability. It's funny to look back now and see that I was really
identifying with seniors as it was safter in my mind to identify as an old
person that a person with a disability. I was 35 years old at the time.
Disability is a taboo in our culture and I know many people do fear being
disabled and being around people with a disability as well as aging and
being around older people.
My work background prior to the accident was working in libraries,
information services and information technology. It made sense for
me to create an online resource on disability as these were the skills
that I already had developed.
Please take a look at the website at DisabledCommunity.Org. I am
seeking volunteers with various types of skills to help me build the website.
Many of these volunteer positions can be conducted from anywhere in
the world.
Volunteers Needed:
Writers on current awareness of various disabilities and treatments.
Adding website resources
Editors of disability subcategories
Website marketing
Website designer (Ruby on Rails preferred).
Bookstore volunteer (San Francisco only at this time)
I can explain more about each of these volunteer roles.
If you are interested in volunteering email me at
admin@disabledcommunity.org.
We also need book donations. If you live within 10 miles of San
Francisco, we can pick up the books from your home or office.
