The Land of Abundance

By Grateful Wednesday, December 19, 2007
The Land of Abundance

Americans.
Gluttons of Abundance.
Never Content.
Not enough money, not enough time.
Too much work. Too much wine.
Too many bills. Not enough thrills.
Always yearning for more…

“Charge it to my account;
She’ll have the Lamb
And I’ll have the Trout”
I need a bigger home.
I want a faster car.
It’s not our fault;
The Jones’s raised the bar

A bigger diamond
A smaller waist
The label on our clothes
Should show we have taste
A face lift, a waist lift
Collagen injections;
We continue to spend to fix imperfections

Still discontented, we consult a physician
‘Depression and anxiety,
My prognosis’, says the clinician.
Take these pills, a massage, a vacation
These are our “fixes”
In our over-indulged Nation

We are American, gluttons of abundance
Forgetting, as we strive
To reach unattainable quests;
We aren’t alone in the world
For it has other guests
People who know nothing of high fashion or cell phones
Or the need to keep building
More elaborate homes

Humble and content just to eat
The food they walked miles for in their bare feet
There’s not nearly enough
When their neighbors arrive;
But they give to them any way
So they too can survive

Homes made of straw, mud and grass;
These people are proud
With no need to prove class
So they seek help from our Abundant Nation
Their pride means little
In the face of starvation

Images of children by the thousands
Appear in their nakedness
Pride put aside
Emaciation and starvation;
Is the abundance of their nation

‘How sad’, we think
As we scrape off our plate
Contemplating the outfit
For our upcoming date

Our Government ignores their pleas for a hand;
Because there are no resources
We want from their land

A few of us take action
To offer assistance;
As our over abundance
Could change their existence!

Hunger.
Oppression.
Disease.
These are the real wars
We all need to fight;
Yet our nation refuses
To put an end to their plight

Hunger should never exist in the world
What if one sat at your kitchen table?
Would you leave his plate empty…
Perpetuating our self-absorbed label?

If each of us commit to provide one meal a day;
Instead of just throwing the extras away
World hunger would end
It would end that same day.

Your a girl after my own heart, I think you may be able to read my mind too.  LOL

Very well done, I enjoyed that.

Your really good at your poems, I wish I had a fraction of your talent.

But I really enjoy your words and how you put things of real life together like that.

Gosh, it's normally me fussing about our overindulgent society and how we treat those less fortunate than us.

You take care, my friend

I'm still praying for some christmas joy for you!

Take Care

Again, I cannot begin to tell you how touched I am. All I wanted to do was to be able to touch someone else with my words. I think I've done that. Thank you for that.

You have your own special talents and they are similar to mine. You have the great gift of being able to connect on a deep level to others in pain. You are a leader. A warrior. And you haven't even tapped all of your talents yet. But you will....thank you again Betty. It means so much to me.
