Hypoxia?

By bzmomkfor Wednesday, January 23, 2008
Well apparently an overnight oximetry monitoring report came back with poor readings.  This lead my doctor to order a sleep study for me.  My question is, how is a sleep study going to help when we've briefly checked my O2 sat levels during the day at rest & at exercise & they've been in the mid 80s.  Plus these sleep studies are expensive.  The other objection is my husband sleeps with one already, it took quite a bit just to get use to him having one, & I have to wear ear plugs.  Back in the ugly primal days of smoke signals & no technology I wore braces.  I actually could pick up radio signals or at least block them unless I sat in the correct spot in my room.  I had the dreaded head gear- I can tell you that I ripped in off in my sleep unknowingly nearly every night.  I don't see how this set up would be much better or much different.  Also, what about me still having low rates during the day when I'm not sleeping.  Mind you, I am much like a hybernating bear & love to be in bed as much as possible but....I'm just curious.  So, seeking answers I write to you all, what the heck is hypoxia & what is done for it?  My web searches have led me to many articles about sea diving or doing loopty-loops at high altitudes but I am not in the air force nor the navy nor do I partake in these activities.  I do live at a fairly high altitude but....that's about it.  I've never smoked but my father was a heavy smoker & died of emphasema, boy was that an ugly death.  Anyway, I'm super tired all the time & I'm very curious for some answers if anyone has some.   Thank you!

Hi Kat,

Hypoxia is a broad term and it refers to the availability of oxygen to the body tissues.  There are so many causes.  I think I remember you mentioning anemia in a previous post?  Well, that is one cause.  Circulatory deficiencies and edema are two others. The symptoms vary according to what's causing the problem.  But usually they include rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, dizziness, cyanosis (bluish color to the skin).  Treatment depends on the cause.  Oxygen therapy is used sometimes.  But for me, it was simply a case of prescribing vasodilators to help increase my circulation.  Unfortuately, I had to stop because my blood pressure is so low to begin with that it caused me to feel faint all the time.  So now I am back dealing with numb fingers and toes on a daily basis.  Not fun. Anyway, please let me know how you make out.

By the way, I just love reading your posts, KatBig Grin.  You are quite the writer.

Hugs,

Mear

Thanks Mear,

I have had anemia several times in life & I usually have low blood pressure but it has been normal lately.  I was diagnosed with Reynauds about 15+ yrs ago (cold hands & feet, can turn blue) I wonder if it's all part of the same thing?  You are very knowledgeable, thanks for sharing the info with me.  Also thank you for the kind words regarding my writing.  Luvs ya muchly~kat

Friend BZ mom

My mom has really bad sleep apnea and I have also cared for a stroke victim back when I was able to work still.  I had to stay over night with him at his sleep study and they can really tell you alot of information from all the electrodes attached to your head & body.

I'm sure you already know how poor sleep is connected with FM.  I think I would do the sleep study and find out about your sleep.

if your not getting enough oxygen to your brain and I'm sure you already know that when we are in a certain stage of sleep, it's when our body heals it self and normally Fm patients bodies have stopped going into that state of sleep for what ever reason.  But if you have a chance of sleeping & receiving enough oxygen, you may really see an improvement in your pain & over all health.

My own personal thought, is that mothers can easily slip into these poor sleep habits, as all through their child bearing years, they have went through times of serious sleep deprivation, they often or most times put themselves in a heightened awareness for they have an infant to care for and need to hear it crying through out the night, some of us have had children or infants that have breathing problems, which makes us even more elert in & during sleep.  We kind of develope conditioned lite sleeping mode and don't allow ourselves to get into a deep enough sleep stage.  With your many beautiful babies, I would tend to think maybe with all the infants you've raised, what if your body has forgotten and you've unknowingly are preconditioned not to allow yourself to drop into any deep sleep, incase one of the kids need you???

It's just my own silly theory.  After reading a great deal of articles on FM and how sleep issues are connected with FM flares and pain, as our bodies don't get the needed sleep for the body to repair itself and most of us FMer's have had babies.  I'm not saying that it's impossible for younger women & men, I'm just saying that those of us with children have learned to listen for a babies cry in the night, so we're always half way prepared to jump & run to our babies and maybe since you just had your last 4? years ago.  Maybe your body has forgotten how to sleep?  Just my thoughts.

I too have issues with waring something on my head to sleep.  But I wonder if we could learn to sleep all over again, maybe will could partially control our pain some?  Maybe we'd not have such severe flare ups?

Of course I have ins to pay for it and have no clue as to how much a sleep study would cost, so I may be all full of hoooie too.  LOL

i have a sleep disorder, the sleep study validated it, showed I get 64% normative restful sleep when I report "best night of sleep, so this study probably not valuable..."

It clearly demonstrated that apnea is not the issue, but repositioning due to discomfort is the issue.

No amount of anything to date is solving my sleep disorder. That I have so much better pain control in general is a remarkable gift.

The sleep disorder is quite disabling with fatigue, cognitive impairment, etc such that I live a very quiet life.

However, I truly value the validation the sleep study offered ME.

Just my expereince in hopes it can be informative re the non-hypoxic/apnea results of the study.

Sincerely,

Jerry

I've been told I'm not making or storing the proper vitamins & nutrients/minerals in my system some how, I'm taking viatamin infusions, suppliments, changing my regular system of meds & now this.  I would really like some help with breathing until the study, I know it's only like 10 days away but that's a long time when gasping & panting for air & worried about your child.  I too hope that the study offers me some validity.

I can't tell you how upset i am to hear what you are going through.

I am in Henderson Nevada, I think too far to be of help.

I would drive you to: (perhaps the order should be rearraned???) a Cardiologist and if that did not get an answer a Pulmonoloist...or a hopsital for an Emergency Room ADMISSION in a reasonably sized community (I simply mean of size such that there is a large number of specialists at hand). I do not practise medicine, but I know an emergency when I read one. please, impose on someone near and dear and run and get help. We all think it has an answer and that you have not been given that answer and most likely it is easily treatable...but only in the hands of competent physician. Please, do this for your children and please, please can someone more competent than myself chime in-that I am having to write this is bewildering. Were you my wife, my mother, my neighbor the above would have already happened.

If you want to call seven zero two five five eight six zero one one.

forgive my languae but i have the balls to care, the balls to be wrong the balls to speak, the wisdom to defer to a higher authority (ER Admit, Pulmonology, Cardioloy) and the compunction to act.
