My doc gave me a sample of Voltaren Gel and I have to say that I was very skeptical...until I used it ONE TIME. It really helped!

The question I have is do topicals really get into the underlying muscles and joints or is the skin just the vehicle that absorbs the medicine into the system.  Voltaren recommends four applications a day by massage.  I think that we all would feel better with four muscle massages each day. If we had them, we probably would feel better than if we just took a pill and waited for it to work. Also we could get along on less systemic medication than without the massages. So is it the skin application or the massages that really help?

My Dr. prescribed Voltarin 1% gel to help alleviated joint pain due to SLE. I would be getting break through joint pain both during the day and at night. I am taking NSAIDS (Celebrex).  Applying the gel give me the pain relief I need.

Please someone explain to me how topical Voltaren Gel can cause stomach problems the same way an oral NSAID does.  I can't find an answer to this anywhere.

I would like to know the answer to theat question also...

I was told by a physician that receiving a NSAID intravenously would not affect my GI tract.  I also remember hearing/reading that the drug itself changes the lining of the stomach because it is a prostaglandin inhibitor, and we need certain prostaglandins to protect the stomach.  I could be totally wrong, but I wish the good doctor who wrote the article could clarify this!

Does it actually heal tendonitis or just mask the pain?

My PM gave me a prescription to treat my flaring tennis elbowm I already take a NSAID for chronic pain. It is supposed to help with the inflammation. It does help with the pain.
