Jen Community Member April 11, 2009
  • I had been taking Oxycodone 40mg twice a day for about 3 years until they pulled it,it was just perfect for me.I went to MS Contin which I HATED.To make a long story short, I was just able to get 20mg(2 twice a day) at my Walgreens. Thanks to Karen's suggestion of liquid oxycodone, when I went to inquire about it my pharmacist told me that they did have the 20mg!!!! Its all so confusing and so wrong that SO MANY of us have to suffer.I hope this info can help someone out there! Ask your pharmacy about the 20mg er tablets. This is just a wonderful site, truly a lifesaver for me!

PS.  I just read the above post and, with all due respect, its simply not true.  The FDA states on its website the they are "diligently" working to increase supplies to previous levels and availability.  The long acting form of this medication (Oxycontin) was never effected.

The short story on the shortage is that one of the makers of Oxycodone applied for approval of a new analgesic.  During the FDA's due diligence, they found some of the equipment at the makers facility was incorrectly calibrated.  This cause well placed concern that the Oxy tablets were being made with too little or too much medicine.  The maker, (wanting approval on new med), shut down its facility to re-calibrate machines.  Because nobody saw this coming, including the other makers of Oxy, there was a big "oh $%&*".  The FDA worked with the other makers to increase their production.

Its sad because its like, "What else?" do chronic pain patients need?

The shortage maybe getting a little better. My VA Dr was just able to switch me back to oxycodone 5mgs for break through pain. He had put me on immediate release 15mg morphine for a couple of months because of the shortage. I hope others are able to get it again. I didn't care for the 15mg morphine. As far as ms contin I was on that years ago and hated it....

The FDA has updated its site to let the public know what caused the shortage of Oxycodone.  We should see the limited availability abate as the month continues.

I agree, MS Contin is terrible!

The shortage will become even worse. THe FDA has given the drug companies 60 days to quit making all of it.  These drugs were made and put on the market before drugs needed to be ok'd. Now they have to quit making them and do it the correct way with all drugs, morphine oxide is in the list too.
