Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 09:04 AMThank you for your reply, I wanted to ask you, have you tried accupuncture? I have a freind who is PG now and has chronic pain in her neck, arm and it gives her migraines. She swears by the accupuncture, but it takes a few sessions to start working. Unfortunatly it didnt work for me and most Insurance CO dont cover it. But she has been able to stay off meds threw her PG so far. But I know what is like to not be able to get off medication, ultram is one of the many I have to take everyday. And sometime I can feel how the meds are messing with my system.

back pain and jaw pain

Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 02:18 PMHey to both of you, so sorry you are stuck in pain at young age, i have been there & still there. My first PG at 18 set off my sciatica,& forever more it has been on & off ever since. Then age 39 did break back,so more added on.As for maggiemae,i feel that your question was more about taking meds during PG vs. your back,is that correct? It seems like this pain is going to be around for some time, has your doc's discussed implanted nerve stim?Implanted pain pump? The nerve stim has no meds involved & pain pump does not cross blood brain barrier,so could ask doc's if cross placenta. Most women don't even like taking tylenol while PG so i understand your hesitation, ask your doc.As far as your back, yes, have C-sect instead of pushing would definately help, during PG not gaining too much weight,(i gained way too much),i ended crying everyday by the end of PG due to pain in lower back. One thing that did help is chiropractor,he would of course need to know about your surgery, also wearing belly band helped support my belly & take pressure off back.It is truly hard to do,the PG,if you are already in pain but i know the urge to precreate is strong, look how many couples are paying big bucks for invitro.I urge you to warn your hubby beforehand how you may turn into an evil woman w/child.I hope you are able to work out the meds & back pain issue so you can have a child, good luck.Jawpainnyc, has your doc looked into Myobloc for your jaw pain? They often give it for people w/neck spasms & migraines. It is a weak form of botox & relaxes the muscles.I get it into my upper back for myofascial pain syndrome, most doc's don't know what this is & it took me awhile to find a doc that gave the Myobloc.Thank God that i found one i was ready to put myself into the aterlife, the pain was sooo bad i could not stand it.I have had i think about 5 injections since 3/2006.You have to find a doc that does trigger point injections they should be able to help you.I live in a state w/o a lot of newer doc's so it was hard to find,my insurance did not pay for it,but guess what,it was $1200. or my life, what would you pick?OK i am done, this is killing my whole body today.Good luck again.

Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 08:48 AMThanks for the information, I went to see my pain Doc who wasn't much help at all. I told him I was thinking about getting PG and he said he had no experience with this, which I was surprized he's been doing this for close to 25 years. He opened a small book with a list of pain meds and said the ultram I am on has no research to know what damage it may cause to a fetus, so he suggested I stay on it. I thought he was crazy, everything I reaserched on ultram said not to take while PG. So I am off to a bad start. I will talk to my OB and ask about the things you suggested.
Thank You
MaggieMae

Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 01:20 PMMaggiemae i did forget one other thing about delivery via C-sect vs. vag birth with your back surgery. I don't know what they did for your surgery. If it is in a fixed state you would more than likely need to have C-sect cuz when baby comes down that S1 area needs to be able to move back so the baby can come down. Hey look the movie stars are having C-sect all the time,i don't know what all their reasoning is but i sure it is not as good as your, some may be,who knows. Just remember that C-sect is a true surgery, you will have pain and scar, but it is worth it for a baby.I had a OB-GYN that did not believe in pain meds after C-sect,butthead,and it was not cuz breastfeeding as i gave the baby up for adoption,he was just butthead. Sorry to go on just been thinking.

pain and being pregnant

Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 02:50 PMHi there,
Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I too had to deal with medications during a pregnancy. I have no doubt that you dr. will be able to provide medications that don't effect a fetus, calling it that just because of terminology. There are meds out there that don't get asborbed into the babies blood line. But that does not mean it won't effect you.
I too have chronic pain, but that all disappeared FOR ME when i was pregnant. But and a big but the pain i experienced after no longer being pregnant was unbearable. So, thinking of this you have to decided whether or not to breast feed.
If you decide not to breastfeed because you are in pain they don't give out any medications to stop the pain you will experience from not nursing. I know this sounds crazy, but the only remedy for that is raw cabbage placed over your breast until your brain says no more milk is to be made. And trust me it works and you won't leave the house without your cabbage.
There are also high risk ob drs who you can consult with.
YOu will also be surprised that being a mother can make you forget about your own body and that your love for your child will come first and all of a sudden you are superwoman and nothing will stop you from taking care of your child.
Good luck to you. lisa

Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 11:29 PMHi there again,
It was 7 years ago and I can't remember really, but I will look up pain meds in my pdr and it will tell me if the drug is a precaution to pregnancy or breastfeeding, because they do enter two ways by blood or breastmilk.
I was lucky and I had one of the most internationaly known drs for lupus as my specialist and he actually told me that smoking cannibas was better then some of the pain meds out there. And after my pregnancy my ra dr. prescribed marinol which is the pill form, but that was to strong for me so i did not continue with that one, but it did work. It helped with nausea also and insomnia.
It might help if you also went and googled meds and pregnancy. You might get more info.
Have you also checked into what foods like black licorice help with pain? Or what foods that make pain worse?
If i don't get back to you by the end of the week send me a post and remind me, please.
Have a pain free day, lisa

Thursday, April 03, 2008 at 08:47 AMThank you for looking. I bet the cannibas would help, but I am a police officer and my job would never let that fly. I plan to work a desk job when I get PG if my body will let me. I have never herd of licorice being helpful to pain I will have to look into it. My pain Doc also suggested vicodin, but he coulnt tell me which is less risky to the baby, vicodin vs ultram. And all I can find on google is they are both on risk level C, what ever that means. Anyways thank you for any information you have it all helps.

Thursday, April 03, 2008 at 08:14 PMHi there,
I know it illegal, thats why i take pain pills.lol but marinol is legal it is prescribed by a arthritis drs. Like i said it was too strong for me, and know way when i first took it did i leave the house! I like being in contol of my mind. Oh and it is black licorice only. It has been used for thousands of years.
I did look up some meds for you in my pdr and this is what I found.
Ecotrin is ok until the third trimester.
Prevacid Naprapac is a catogory b, not for nursing.
Roxicodone or Oxycodone hci is a cat b, not for nursing.
Oxyfast cat b, not for nursing.
Nubain is cat b, and is used for pre and post labor, but not for nursing.
Motrin not for third trimester.
So, Nubain seems to be the best as far as the pdr listing. I would also ask your pharmicist they go to school for many years and know alot more then most drs.
I hope this helps you.
Have a pain free day, Lisa

Friday, April 04, 2008 at 10:40 AMThank You for looking that up for me, It was a huge help. I did a little more research and I think your right Nubain might be the way to go. I still have to see what my Doc says about it, but he has been very good with my suggestions so far. He knows I dont want to be on meds but I have no choice to function. So how has your pain been have you figured out how to control it?
Hope you feel better

Friday, April 04, 2008 at 03:57 PMHi again,
Well I am glad that like me you are doing so much research so as not to harm your baby! I think you will be a great mom. You sound like a mom that will have twins.
Control my pain, no such thing. Chronic and constant is my pain, even when i am sleeping and i am over due for my pain meds i dream about being in pain and that wakes me up. I have a spinal cord stimulator that is a big help, but I still have to take pain meds every few hours and yes it sucks, but that is my life so it is the norm for me. Thank you for asking.

Sunday, April 06, 2008 at 08:22 AMI would love to have twins. We want two kids, so to get them both in one shot would be great lol.
I am sorry to hear about your pain, sleeping is the only time I realy feel relief. But geting to sleep and staying asleep is tough. I know that my pain dosn't compare to alot of other people. I feel lucky I can still find away to do my job, but it is a struggle every day. I am scared it will only get worse and I will be out of work someday. It dose help talking to people like you who understand.
Thank you

Tuesday, April 08, 2008 at 01:49 PMI too have had not only one surgery on my back but two! If I had to do it all over again I would NOT have agreed to the second one as it was a complete failier and left me in MORE PAIN and even MORE disabled then I was before!
As for your concern about pain meds and becoming pregnant,.....I have always wanted to be a mother and have a family I can call my own as I never had one (grew up in childrens aid) so having children was VERY important to me! I worked very hard on gaining an education and obtaining a sucessful career took me to the age of 27 and is when I had my accident at work. I had to have surgery immediately to relieve the pressure off my nerve from a herniated disc. After my operation I was devastated when the Drs said I could NEVER have kids as I was left disabled and in daily, chronic pain. I asked what would be the worst that would happen IF I did become pregnant? The Drs said since I could barely handle the daily, chronic pain I was already in, I would never be able to handle the extra pain normal woman get with just being pregnant. I went home in tears and spent many days and nites thinking how important it was for me to have children of my own and thought of many ways I could eleviate the extra pain the pregnacy would bring.
I am VERY happy to say I am a PROUD mother of not only 1 but 3 beautiful children who give me the strength to keep going each day! I can honestly say Im SURE if it wasnt for my 3 wonderful gifts from God, I probably would have given up years ago!
Now, Im not saying getting pregnant is right choice for YOU but that I just wanted to share my story with you since you are in a situation I once was. Everyone is different, you need to work out YOUR 'pros and cons' to becoming pregnant but I will encourage you to do 1 thing! SEARCH AND RESEARCH BEING PREGNANT AND BEING ON PAIN MEDS!! My 3rd child was born addicted to the pain meds I was on during that pregnacy even though the Dr. who was so called looking after me at that time said it was safe for my unborn baby and better for myself to stay on and continue taking my meds. I am happy to say she is now a very happy and healthy 8 yr old but I still, to this day feel awfully guilty that the 1st few weeks of her life were not pleasant to say the least even though I have been told over and over again it was not my fault as the Dr. was the one who I put my trust in and was suppost to be knowledgable regarding this.
Good Luck with whatever choice you make
Take Care and God Bless!
A VERY Blessed Mommy of 3 :)

Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 09:05 AMThank you for sharing, it gives me some hope of children in my future. I just dont want to be having kids at 40 so I am trying to figure out the right way to do this quickly. My biggest fear is haveing a baby addicted to meds, I am sorry you had to go threw that. But I have been told over and over again that pain during PG can be worse for the baby. So who realy knows what is the right thing to do. But if you have any suggestions please let me know.
Thank you for giving me hope.

Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 11:33 PMI was 29 at the time I decided to have my FIRST child. That was after having my 1st back operation, I decided it was now or never if I was going to have a family to call my own, as my biological clock was ticking and my back wasnt going to get any better. My pregnacies were not easy but once you see that beautiful face you forget all that (extra) pain you went thro for 9 months. I had my ortho. Dr. and gyno working together to see me through not 1 but 3 successful pregnacies. I had to accept the fact that I would only be able to deliver by C-sections only but everything is worth it. :)
If you have anymore questions or concerns or you just feeling like chatting, Im here if you need. If you have msn messanger it might be a little more easier then on here if you like.
Whatever choice you make regarding having a baby I wish you much happiness.
Take care and God Bless,
Happily blessed mommy of 3 :)

To young to be in so much pain...........
cyberchar
Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 04:28 PMPlease don't take the wrong way, I can only imagine how scary having a baby would be with the kind of pain your are in at this time.
It's just that the phrase, "I'm too young to be in so much pain" always makes me cringe. At what age is it acceptable to be in pain that severe? Just because we may have gray hair and wrinkles doesn't mean that our lives are any less valuable or that our bodies hurt less because we are older. We still love and want to be able to show that love without crying out in pain when a little 2 year old jumps on your lap and says, "Nanny, I love you!"
If you make the decision to have a baby, remember that almost all pain meds are going to affect that tiny little being inside you. I would definately speak to an ob/ gyn specialist and see what, if any, pain meds will not harm the fetus. Back in the 70s when my generation was having babies, there was a group of doctors who stressed the damage they thought that any medication given while the mom was in labor could cause problems if the baby had weak lungs and lists other reasons for 'natural' childbirth.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the very, very best of luck. Next time, though, when you're thinking about how unfair it is to be in so much pain at such a young age, just give a tiny thought about how much your new baby will learn, and how much love granny can give to your newborn.

Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 09:12 AMI am sorry if the title made you cringe. I do agree with you, My Mother in Law has fibromyalgia and I dont for one sec think my pain is more important or worse then hers. I think the title came from my doctors constantly saying I am to young for this. But next time I will correct them. And as far as the Meds go I will not let myself get PG untill I figure out the best way for my body and my baby. Thank you for your comment.

I have chronic jaw pain that leads to headaches and eye aches, and neck and shoulder pain----sometimes not able to wash my own darn dishes!! But I hear you, I've wondered about having kids, how? I take klonopin and can't live without it.
Ask your doctor and no matter what, with your problem, I suggest Cesarian section so they can basically put you to sleep and cut the baby out, small scar near pubic hair---no laborious pushing out the baby which will upset your condition.
Best
