My husband has suffered for 20 years with chronic back pain. He has a dx of DDD, Spinal stenosis, kyhphosis and scrolosis of the spine. He finally saw a pain specialist/anetheselogiest in 2006. He went through a series of injections, none of which worked. Finally he was okay for a intratheaceal morphine pump placement one year ago this month. He has gone routinely to have the pump set up. Meanwhile he has weined himself off of Methadone 10 x 10 per day. He currently is taking Oxy IR 5 mg x 20 per day, Lotab 7.5 mg x 6 per day and Baclofen x 4 per day. He has had no problems exact breakthrough constant pain pertaining to the pump not being set up high enough yet. The doctor started about 6 months ago setting the pump up a little higher than he normally would, because my husband has tolerated the higher dose without complications. Last month he had the pump turned up and 48 hours later he had severe nausea and vomitting, chills, shakes and overall ill feeling for 2 days. Then it all cleared. We thought he had a virus and thought nothing more of it. We went 5 days ago and they set the pump up again. But this time exactly 48 hours later he had all the same things happen that we had thought was just a virus. It lasted 2 days and he felt better again.

In december we will return for a complete pump refill and set up and this time he will no longer be taking the Baclofen by mouth because they are going to add it to the pump. Doctor has been setting him up a little higher because of the severity of his pain and dx.

He has seen a great change in his pain level over the last year and can now rate his pain at a 6 instead of the orginal above 10. Would like to know if anyone else has experiencedd this same illness after a set up and is it considered too much med or a reaction or withdrawl?  Thank You for your help. Would like to hear from Bob Engelbardt also. I have read almost all the post on this subject and he seems knowledgeable.

The best place to get answers to questions about pain pumps is on our forum.  There is an ongoing thread entitled “Willing to share experience with intrathecal morphine pump implant” that was started and is maintained by Bob Englebardt.  If you don’t find an answer to your question already there, please feel free to post your question.
