Q: Do I have to be off narcotics before getting a morphine pump?

Why do I have be off narcotics completely for 6 weeks before having a morphine pump implanted? I have MHE and hane been on something for 7 years. I weaned myself off methadone because it no longer worked. I was told by thepain management doctor I would have to be off narcotics for at least 6 weeks before I could get a pain pump. It has been 2 weeks and I am miserable. I can't sleep and have had bad thoughts. The doctor says too bad. Is this standard practice for waiting to get a pump?

I haven't heard of that, but I don't have much experience with morphine pumps. The best place to get answers to questions about morphine pumps is on our forum.  There is an ongoing thread entitled “Willing to share experience with intrathecal morphine pump implant” that was started and is maintained by Bob Englebardt.  If you don’t find an answer to your question already there, please feel free to post your question.
