Antidepressants can be effective for pain relief.  However, a new study has shown that combining an antidepressant with an anticonvulsant (like Lyrica or Neurontin) is more effective for nerve pain (neuropathy) than either drug by itself.  Here's a link to an article about the study:  http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/09/29/chronic-pain-neuropathic-drugs.html
