The most common causes of rib cage pain are:

• A bruised, cracked or fractured rib (If the pain gets worse when you bend or twist your body, this is likely.)

• Costochondritis – inflammation of cartilage near the breastbone

• Osteoporosis – thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density

• Pleurisy – inflammation of the lining of the lungs (causes pain when you take a deep breath or cough)

All of these need to be treated by a doctor, so I'd suggest seeing your doctor soon.

It could be.  I'm afraid there's no way to tell without a physical examination and possibly some tests.  Any sharp, stabbing pain like you describe needs to be checked by a doctor.

Thank You for the info. Do you no the name of the tests that would diagnose what the problem is? Also, what field of medicine would the Doctor be an expert in.

Cheers! jack

I don't know what tests might be needed, if any.  It would depend on what the doctor thinks based on your symptoms and a physical exam.   As for what kind of doctor, if you have a primary care physician, I'd start there.  If you don't have a regular doctor, an internist would probably be a good choice.

Thanks Karen, I had an appointment with my GP and he found a mass in the area of the pain. He has

set up a ultra sound test that would  give him more info. He said he had a patient who had simular problem. They found the mass was pressing on a nerve and when the mass was reduced the pain went awaySmile I think i am on the right path.

Cheers! and God Bless Jack

I'm so glad you've already gotten to see your doctor, Jack.  It does sound like you're on the right path.  Thanks for letting me know.  I hope you'll keep me posted on how you're doing.  God bless you!  Karen
