How long does it take for a 73 year old to be addicted to MS contin 15 mg.
Many people are worried about "addiction", but I find that many people do not understand the real meaning of addiction. Drug addiction is really a term that is used to define those who have a drug seeking behavior (lie, cheat and steal in order to obtain medications) and use drugs despite causing harm to their lives, i.e. work, relationships and home. The key word is "harm" because when used properly pain medications should really improve quality of life.
When asking about "addiction", many people really are meaning to ask about "physical dependence." Dependence is the natural reaction of the body to a chemical like MS Contin which can lead to withdrawls if the chemical was suddenly discontinued. Can physical dependence lead to abuse and addiction? Certainly, this continuum is a slippery slope. Only honesty with yourself and your doctor can keep you from falling towards addiction.
Because withdrawls are no fun (and occassionally life-threatening), it is important to talk to your doctor before suddenly discontinuing any substance like pain killers (opioids) that cause physical dependence.
