What could cause sharp, shooting pain in toes?

I've got pain in two toes on my left foot, the second and third toes. My doctor said I sprained them somehow, but I can't walk on it and I'm getting shooting pains from this.  Any idea what it could be?  I didn't go for an X-ray.

Much of our pain is, in fact, due to muscle strains that usually clear up in a couple of weeks time. This, along with your doctor examining your toes and their condition (swelling, redness, how flexible the toes are, whether they are straight or not,) may have suggested to him that you had a sprain.

If you're not feeling better after a few weeks, then your doctor should dig deeper and, if he or she doesn't, then it's time to ask for a second opinion.

Most causes of toe pain are caused by poor fitting shoes that don't provide good support. You might want to check out Health Central section on Foot Pain for more information.
