I went intolorent to Hydrocodone I think
I just started pain management for chronic neck and upper back pain. I been taking Hydrocodone 10-325 mg. (Yellow Pill).I noticed right away that they are not as effective as Hydrocodone 10-500. So I take Tylenal 250 mg to make up the difference. I think my tolorence has change becuase first thing in the morning I take 1 1/2 of Hydrocodone instead of 1. I feel it safe to do so.I now need to take "1 1/2 Hydrocodone 10-325 in order to get the same pain relief that I did when i first started on this "pill" a week ago. Should i ask my doctor to switch me to a different medications? Or should I switch to Hydrocone 10-500 (Bue Pill)? Please reply. Brenda
hi,
it is always safe to talk to the doc about this, he must know what you are taking, thats the safest, i have noticed i have to take half or whole extra, one system does become used to the dosage, regardless of what we take, tylenol or any other meds if we take it on a regualar basis, but it is a good idea to stay with the 1 1/2 if you can, and try with staying with one and add the half an hour or so later if needed, each morning is not the same, we have some days that are a tiny bit lighter with pain, why i am saying this is,
1 1/2 then 2, then 2 1/2 etc ir switching to a another drug that is more potent, and there has to be a point where we cannot carry on with pain meds. i mean, i dont mean to sound callous about this i understand chronic pain very well, but where do we stop? :) i do care, honestly i do,
its just that, we have to care about ourselves a bit more than the health providers do, we only do have ourselves at the end of the day, geesh, its such a no win isnt it, take care

hi brenda
i asked my doctor if he would send me for more tests, he said no, i said, my job is on hold, i have to find the cause of this pain it prevents me from living a real, natural life, i want my life back, he said, i am not sending you for other tests, nor am i giving you any more pain meds, i was already in tears and in so much pain when i was seeing him yesterday, he looked down and was shocked to see my crying, he had to take a break from all patients, when my husband goes with me he is ok, when i go alone he doesnt care, he is a forgetful senile ole boot, but its too hard to find any doctors,
so thats where i am at, whew, thanks for letting me vent, :)
yes, i have taken fewer and less pain meds and it does work as tho it am new to the pain meds, and they are strong enough,
its been such a long long road trying to find the cause of the pain i want to find a truck and run under it when it comes on,, a neurologist suggested if i continued to see her i would be elgible for injections, that means give myslef a shot of morphine etc whe the pain comes on, thats tooooo scary, meanhwile i am tapering off my meds since i will not get any more,
but, i take 2 travel tabs at bedtime to sleep, it works it really does but i have gotten used to it :) so i am taking one, the next night two again, i remember my motherin in-law took antianflamatory and they stopped working her body was too used to it finally she listened and got a new drug, and she got relief too,
take care, and i hope they find the cause of your pain and are able to cure it :)

Hi Mindy,
Thank you for your e-mail, that really help. I see my doctor this Thursday and I will ask him how I should back off my meds. so I do not become tolarent too fast. I know that can happen and i want to prevent that from happening to me even if i need to not take my pain meds some days. Maby that is why I am getting rebound headachs, to tell me to slow down on my meds.
I am really sorry about your doctor quiting your meds. Something wierd is up with that. Be aware of physical withdraws, If you feel you really need your meds. after you are out, then, call your doctor and see if he can call you in a refill for withdraws. I wish you the best as you find a new doctor. I think you will be ok finding a new one, just call around to clinics and ask what family doctor there at their clinic does pain management, and then get in to see him. Have a nice day.

hi brenda,
i wish you all the best seeing the doctor, did you get the HiNi shot? :)
i did,
i am not overly concerned about the pain meds, they dont cover the pain 100% if they did ohh that would be wonderful, but i am concerned about getting to the root of the problem, for now i have a months supply and i am just tapering off, i am okay with that, i dont want any meds to rule my life, and they do right now and i dont like that, i want to rule my life <smiles>
what bothers me is the empahsis there is on MEDS, and i, like many others get side tracked and think its the answer,
my previous doctor was great, he left for a better job elsewhere, what i didn like was he thought, managing the pain was the answer, not exploring the issue, but he was a cool doc to talk to and so kind, if he had stayed then he would have gone to the next step once the pain was under control, too many take for granted the good doctors they have, and i do see both sides, some docs get fed up with not having the answers, but what my doctor did by not wanting to try and find the cause and dismiss the whole thing has made me realize he is not a health care provider, so there are postives no matter how i look at it.
i wish you all the best, and you have the right attitude, you do sound very responsible, take care.

Hi Mindy.
Thank you for your email I enjoyed it. I have not recieved the H1N1 shot yet, I has been hard to find who has it still. I am still trying to get that shot. Scary flu!
You doctor sounds really neat. Maby he can refer you to another one? Just a suggestion. but yeah, your doctor should have helped you more to find the cause of your pain at the same time he prescribed your pain pills.
Why do your meds not cover your pain %100? you right on one you say that would be wonderful, i know what mean. When I have a rebound headach forget it. i am going without my lortab tomarrow because of this rebound headach i have right now. anyways i am just curious why you cannot get pain relief, you deserve that relief.
I understand how you and i both want to get to the source of our pain and just get cured someday. You said your meds. are ruling your life, and you need it not to. i think i know what your saying, like, it really sucks when the pain cannot be helped from the pain meds that day. but when the pain is gone from the pain pills, what a great day! anyways am i on the same page? your fun to talk to. drop me a note when you have time.
your friend,
Brenda

Hi Mindy,
Thank you for your response, I apprieciate it. I agree I need to let my doctor know I been taking more then prescribed, and will tell him what I been doing this Thursday.
You answered my question about tolorence, I knew the direction I am going, but I needed to hear it from someone that has been where I am. I apprieciate your advice and insight. Have you ever tried going off pain meds for a day or two and seeing if that helps with the tolarence level from pain meds.? I am thinking i need to back off the meds. for a day or two when they do not seem to work. Then see if they work from not taking it for a couple days. Or do I truely need to go up on my dose of lortab (if possible, it may be time for a stronger pain meds. for me).
I am not sure since I have not experiimented with that, what do you think?
I really apprieciate your answers to my questions, I am new to pain management. I am hoping for a cure, I would rather be cured then be on pain meds. for too long.
