Frustrated with daily pain
40 yr old female, healthy all my life til March 19, 2009. Extreme neck pain and h/a's, nausea, vomiting, rash, weakness. Had 6 ER visits, finally admitted for 4 days after several tests. Diagnosis was "viral" meningitis. Was out of commission til end of May. Tried all Herbal remedies which helped immensenly up til end of July. Suddenly I experienced excruciating all over body pain with fever and chills. Thought it was the flu however, this "episodes" came over and over, closer in time frame. Saw my PCP and ran tests which showed anemia as well as elevated ESR (sed rate) and C-Reactive Protein. Was told the virus may still be lingering to give it some time. Four weeks later, I had the worse pain of my life and it became every other day to daily. I was unable to walk, continued fevers, chills and all over body pain. Difficulty walking. Labs were drawn again and the ESR and CRP were now elevated even more. Ref'd to Rheum to r/o autoimmune dx and all came back negative. Was told by Rheum that I may have an infectious disease or metastasized cancer. Sent to Infectious Disease doctor and all lab except yet again the ESR and CRP were elevated even more. Went to oncologist, who ordered MRI spine due to extreme pain in back becoming worse over time. MRI showed T-1 thru T-11 with "lyctic?" lesions, white looking spots on MRI. Radiologist reported suspected findings stated, "multiple myeloma, lymphoma or leukemia", had bone marrow biopsy, showed 5% plasma cells. Was ref'd back to Rheum who stated she could not pinpoint the cause of my labs and the MRI findings but they could treat me as a "blind" patient meaning no specific diagnosis but based on symptoms we should start on 40 mg of Prednisone then taper to 20 mg by Dec. and re-run tests. I refused the steroids since noone can pinpoint a specific diagnosis. I feel I need a 2nd opinion, however, my insurance is taking forever with an authorization for this. Any suggestions or similar experiences with other patients? What should I do? I am so frustrated with the amount of time I have been in pain. Please help!!
Those lesions could be caused by swelling, I think you should take Pred. if your doctor thinks it would help, isn't it worth the relief? It could help the pain!
