Q: Has anyone tried Cesamet for pain? My Dr is thinking of prescribing it for me..

I have been diagnosed with chronic pain and I suffer from Rheumatoid, Psoriatic and Osteoarthritis.  I also have Fibromyalgia, severe DDD C4 - C7 and Hashimotos Thyroid.  I have one type of pain or another daily.  I have been using Oxycontin of years to deal with my pain but it isn't effective anymore.  I am slowly decreasing it and my Dr wants to try Cesamet instead.  I know that Cesamet is a synthetic form of Marijuana and I would love to hear from others who have tried it.

Thank you,

Sherry

I don't have any personal experience with Cesamet but I've seen people discussing it on our ChronicPainConnection forum.  Try going there and asking if anyone has tried it.

Note:  If you've never been to the forum before, you do have to register there separately from the SharePost registration but you can use the same e-mail address and password.

I hope someone there can help you.

Hello:

I take this along with my Oxycontin, I also take Lyrica for my Fibromyalgia and severe back and leg pain.  It is great, just make sure you dose right because it will make you slow for the day (on a high) but very happy.

Holy cow!! That's alot to deal with!  I am currently taking Cesamet along with Morphine...which is too much together.  I am currently going back and forth to try to find a balance that works on my doctors advice.  I currently don't have a definite yes or no , as to whether it works well though.  I wish I could be of more help.  I will keep you up to date with my progress and hopefully be of some help to you.  My best wishes to you.  I hope you have a good support system...P.S. I also take Gabapentin.  Most of these meds are for my Fibromyalgia, which is severe, but I have a few other medical problems too.

Hi ,

I have Rheumatoid , Osteoarthiritis, and Fibromyalgia. I am on 0.5 mg of Cesamet.1 at bedtime and 1 in the morning.

It works great for the stiffness and relieves alot of my pain.

Definately worth a try.

I'm a 49 year old male suffering from chronic arthritis sciatica and advanced astrophysics, three months ago I was diagnosed with possible CLL(chronic lymphocytic leukemia)but after many test it turned out negative, because of the inflammation in my joints,my bodies immune system is fighting on overtime, thus causing the white blood cells to show high in blood work, also the swelling of lymphatic glands which one of the characteristics of CLL,my problem started 20 years ago but I only started pain relief drugs for the past 5 years, starting with Tylenol extra strength to ware I'm at today,
For the last two years I have been taking oxycodone 5m four times a day, terrible shit, but works great for pain management, but I haven't had a good night sleep in years, and thus brings us to Cesamet, this stuff really works for sleep and also no Moore restless leg syndrome,it helps too with pain management, only a couple of down falls with it,1, I get the munchies,2. It lasts about six hours so I cant drive of operate machinery, other than that it is one of the better drugs,I hope this helps and I hope for the best for you,

Wow, I take Tramadol for the same reasons. It definitely helps with my RLS and I take Trazadone for sleeping. Smile I wonder if it is a similiar type drug as with what your taking?

I have chronic pain and have gone through a miriad of drugs to see what is most effective. The use of oxtcontin was giving me horrid nightmares. I am using Tramadol once a day and seems somewhat effective. With the combination of Cesamet there seems to be a solution, for me anyway.

I dont know whether or not its because Cesamet gives you that sense of well being that eases the pain or because its cannaboid based. I dont care.

The upside is it does work. The down side is if you dont have a script plan the cost is enormous. If your trying to loose weight dont use it. It gives you a huge appetite.

I use Cesamet in combination with Tramadol and at night Tamazepam so I can sleep peacefully. Having a doctor that likes to try new things is also a bonus.

I too love the Tramadol. I usually take 2to 3 Tramadol a day. It really helps with pain. If I don't take it... (I did a test) I really suffer!!! Love the stuff!!! :)

I am just heading down to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to see my pain doctor on October 6, 2010.  My family doctor and I have agreed to trying Cesamet.  I to suffer all and more just like you.  I have had enough with the drugs like Oxycontin, Hydromorphone, etc drugs.  My pain doctor 12 years ago gave me a offer to be able to smoke the real stuff.  But I did not at the time want to do that.  But I have had enough of this pain and would like to stay working for at least the next year while my husband is away to college. I am going to give it a try, starting on October 6th, (Cesamet) my worst fear is it will not give me pain relief.  At this point all we can do is keep trying stuff until we find what really works of us.   Good Luck! Hope you find the pain relief that is right  for you....

I too have been diagnosed with Rhuematoid Arthritis and Fybromyalgia. I have constant pain 24 hours for more than three years. I take 1 mg of Cecemat once a day in the morning along with 60mg of Oxycontin three times a day, and I find this to be some help with pain. According to my pai management doctor it is best used in conjunction with Oxycontin. Alone its not much help. There has been much success in Fybromyalgia patients I have been told.

Hi, I was diagonsed with Bi-lateral Repetative stress injury (affecting both arms from finger tips to shoulders.  About a year ago a doctor treating me for related depression put me on cesamet 0.5mg at bedtime.  Within three days I noticed that the pain was almost gone.  After about 4-5 months a 0.5mg was added in the morning.  I am currently weening myself off as I am experiencing memory loss, difficulting forming words and sentences.  I meet with a Rheumatoidigist this afternoon to get an update on my earlier diagnose.

I had fibromyalgia diagnosed over 10 years ago. I've tried many drugs including Cesamet. I didn't like the feeling of being high all the time, although my pain specialist said it shouldn't do that. It also wasn't that effective for the pain. Now I take Zytram 150 in the morning (tramadol extended release) and top up with Tramacet (tramadol with tylenol) when needed. And I use Zopiclone for sleep with very good results. I really find that the tylenol makes the tramadol work better. Doubling the Zytram isn't as effective. Tramadol isn't supposed to be as addictive as codeine and others. I also take Effexor 75 extended release. I don't know if it really helps the pain, but if I stop taking it for even 1 day it is excruciating! Some say this is a side effect of stopping the drug. Both Effexor and Tramdol affect serotonin action in the brain. Try to stay positive and don't stop till you find a doctor who will help you find something that works. Doctors who are afraid to treat pain are not for you!

I suffered a spinal chord fracture and a couple bouts with cervical cancer, (surgery i.e radical hysterectomy and radiation internal and external). I take oxycontin and am prescribed cesamet.  It provides the same relaxing feeling as if you had eaten some kind of "brownie."  It is not like it provides any "pain" relief but it does relax you which in turn takes the edge of the grinding chronic pain.  Don't make the mistake of thinking it will get you "high" but it will relax you which calms the pain ever so slightly.  Those of us who are in chronic pain will understand how any amount of releif is welcomed'  Bless you and I hope you can find some kind of relief.
