Q: I need some answers before Monday.....

Hi...alittle history. I am a mom of 3, all in school. I have DDD and have been on Darvocet for 2 yrs 6 a day but it has not worked well lately. I have ALOT of break thru pain and dont have anything else to take. My sports med doc who diagnosed me cannot LONG TERM prescribe harder meds because he just does not.

My question is..I went to my first Pain Management appt Thurs. I have friends who go to PM docs and just take regular pain meds, an Extended release something like oxy something and like Lortab or whatever..and they say that works great, well when I get there mine wants to put me on Suboxone and percocet. A tiny dose of suboxone daily and 3 percocet 7.5 3x a day. I have to do it or he wont give me any other or more meds ever he said. ALSO, he has to administer the first does of the suboxone in his office after I have gone 14 to 16 hrs with NO pain meds so basically on the edge of withdrawal beginnings he said and then I have to sit there for 2 hrs, then I cant have my pain meds till night, but he siad I wont want them. WHY IN THE HECK is he a Pain Management doc. He says OMG you will love this medicine you will feel so new. But everything I read is for detox. I am not an addict. I am fairly new to this and hurt so why do I need something for addiction when I am in pain.....He said normal PM docs do not like him because he pushes Suboxone. Also on drugs.com it says DO NOT take this with any narcotic Pain meds. Well he gave me percocet to take with it. Im very scared. I need to know BY MONDAY what to do, tell him to go to heck or stick with it. I dont call 6 darvocet a day bad, and I hurt while Im on that much Darvocet....and that is the weakest I know. I am just really afraid to believe him. Apparantly he is friends with my sports med doc.

I do have a back up appt with a diff PM doc but not until April. It is my friends doctor. HELP!

I am sorry to hear of your troubles.  And, believe me it sounds like you may indeed be headed for some if what you are telling us is clear.  I have studies in the field of substance abuse for 3yrs and have my Ass. of Science studing for my Bach at this time.  Although I certainly am not a DR. I do know if you mix suboxone and a narcotic together be prepared to spend at least a few days IN BED recovering.  A combo (of opiods and suboxone) will indeed make you quite ill. Suboxone is for people to take if they are abusing opiods and have become addicted to them.  It sounds to me like you have simply built up a tolerance for the pain med you are now taking.  This in no way, shape or form makes you an addict and DO NOT let anyone tell you otherwise!!!  If you have a legitamate chronic pain condition and want pain control you have a right to that.  Get away from this Dr.  he is either very misinformed about suboxone or has some other reason for his medical approach.  Go to their site naabt.org and suboxone.com  If you are given suboxone it will BLOCK THE EFFECTS OF OPIOIDES. Another thing you should be aware of is that suboxone should not be given or used with people who have chronic pain conditions.  This is from the companies very own public education lituature.  For people with chronic pain, we are being labeled as addicts inappropriately'  I am against this blatent disregard for human dignity and discrimination.  Pleasde do not let these 'medical people tell you who you are and dismiss you as someone you are not"  I wish you the best.  surviver48&counting
