I have been taking Ciprofloxacin for my Crohn's disease and fistula's for about 3 years, within the last year i have not been able to take any other drugs with out getting a (body) yeast infection. I have a back injury and have tried pain meds and have had a yeast infection on my belly, innner thighs,  & chest,  from the differant pain meds they have tried to pump into me. I cant even ware the back patch, or take a Tylonal without getting a vaginal yeast infection. Can this be caused by the Cipro and if so why?

Thank you

It's wierd to think about, but we're basically bags of micro-organisms living in perfect balance when things are how they're supposed to be. Anytime you take an antibiotic, you're killing off some microbes..and that allows other microbes to flourish. Specifically, yeast. If it's vaginal, you'll need something like Monistat to treat. For yeast on belly, thighs, etc., here's a great treatment my daughter (a PA) turned me onto. Rub antiperspirant over the area (this keeps the area dry: yeast needs moisture to grow) and then powder over that with Desenex. You'll find it on the aisle for dealing with athlete's foot, which sounds strange, but the 2% Miconazole Nitrate is an antifungal no matter where you use it (except DON'T use it on mucous membranes). If you have no luck with that, you might have to get a prescription for a stronger percentage.

Anyway, the relief is almost instantaneous for the itching and burning, and works pretty quickly controlling the rash.

As to why adding other drugs to Cipro triggers it: that's apparently your tipping point. Your body can handle so much and then the balance gets out of whack...

Good luck. Oh, by the way, I've gotten used to using the antiperspirant on the areas most prone to get yeast even when I'm not suffering an outbreak. It doesn't hurt anything, and often that stops it before it gets started. (Remember, the little guys need moisture to grow!)

One can get very strong probiotics ( acidolophous and other strains of it help to restore the flora that is imbalanced after antibiotics and some other meds of that type.) Probiotics are wonderful, easy to take, and are readily available at the helath food store, and Trader Joe's. Try to get the ones with about 4 billion + acipholoudus strains in them.  They are lactose free, and are great to take if one has flatulence from foods, stomach aches and bowel upsets.  Follow the directions, and if you need, increase the dose a little at a time.  It will take care of yeast infections if you take enoguh and every day.  The typical reaction if too much acidopholous is taken  will be diahrrhea, and then cut back a little.  This is one of the easiest and most common way to balance the flora and overcome the imbalance of the yeast. Sugars and sweets contribute to yeast infectiosn, so try and get off sugar and white flour for a whle.  I have been using them for 25 years, my daughters do as well, and at the ifrst sign of an infection , start and keep it up daily.  They are good for sthe stomach, gut and digestion.  Giveit a ew days to work.

Good luck
