low tolerance to egg& fish. Flu shot, yes or no
I am a diabetic with bad heart, COPD, 20lbs over weight, A very low tolerance to egg and hives from fish. should I get a flu shot? I assumed if egg is an allergy I can't get it. WE had nurses come for my husband and one of them was very sick. I thought my husband was dying when indeed he had the flu. So I got it and spent a week in the hospital. My husband died of Cancer in April and now that I am alone, I tend to worry more about catching things. Vina Roy, Oh. I am 72.
You're in a tough situation. Normally flu shots are highly recommended for diabetics, however, according to the CDC, if you're allergic to chicken eggs, you should not get a flu shot without first consulting your doctor. Ultimately only you and your doctor can weigh the risks and benefits and make a decision.
If you're not able to get a flu shot, try to take extra precautions during flu season. Avoid crowds, carry antiseptic wipes and use them to clean the handles of shopping carts or wipe your hands after touching anything in public, wash your hands frequently, keep your hands away from your face, and try to stay away from anyone who is sick or thinks they are getting sick.
You might want to ask your doctor if he would give you a prescription for Tamiflu or another one of the antivirals to have on hand in case you get the flu so you don't have to go out when you're sick or find someone to go get it for you. The antivirals are most effective when taken within the first 72 hrs. of the flu's onset.
