Q: Seeking information of better medication for chronic back pain while awaiting surgery date.

Hi, My name is B, I have been on hydro for almost 3 years progressively having to take more to just help the pain, I was scheduled to have fusion in December one week prior to my surgery my neurosurgeon retired, leaving me hanging. I have finally found a new surgeon who I am comfortable with and will be rescheduling my surgery. My question is, I tak hydro 10mg 1 every 6 hours, if I don't and the pain gets severe they won't give me any relief.  So I do take them regularly,  I have asked my doctor if there isn't anything

that is time released or that would work better, I feel like I am building up a resistance. She told me I am already taking the strongest medicine I can take.  I feel like she's just tired of my pain and would rather I didn't bother her anymore.  Any suggestions, they would be deeply appreciated.  Thanks litterally the pain in the butt!!

Hi there...by Hydro, do you mean Hydrocodone?  And, if I'm not mistaken, isn't that Vicodin?  There's a lot more pain medications out there for you.  I will tell you, however, that most doctors, with the exception of pain management doctors, won't prescribe anything stronger until after surgery.  I think there's a big fear for most doctors that the feds will start giving them trouble.  I live in Fresno, CA, and there was an article in our paper about a year ago regarding this subject.  I take Kadian and OxyContin, and I've taken it for years now, due to chronic pain.  I've had 2 back surgeries, one of which failed, so I live with some pretty awful pain all the time.  The problem with stronger meds is that they are physically addictive and not much fun coming off of, so that may be another reason for your doctors apprehension to give you stronger drugs.  Be honest with your doctor and don't be afraid to ask some tough questions regarding the pain meds.  It's your life and everyone deserves to have some quality in it, without suffering from terrible back pain.  Hope this helps you some...let me know how it goes.  And remember, you're the one who has to live in your shoes, not your doctor!  KionaCool

KIona is right, vicodin is not the strongest you can take, I went from vicodin to vicodin HP high potency and built up a resistance, they put me on percoset and it was ok but a triple copy prescription is a hassle as you have to physically pick it up and they dole it out in small quantities. I had one Dr. give me Talwin, but others said it was way to potent for everyday use.

I say if your new Dr. is kinda givin you the cold shoulder so to speak about your pain, find another Dr. that is a bit more feeling. My new Dr. which I'm going to change acts like you should just tough it out, sorry Doc but I dont need to be kept up almost all night with pain
