Percocet or oxycodone is a narcotic pain reliever (an opiate)that also has acetaminophen in it. Since its a narcotic your doctor is probably worried about addiction. RxList states that addition is 'relatively rare' in people with chronic pain but rises significantly if a person has a history of alcohol or substance abuse.   If used in high amounts percocet can also cause withdrawl: unpleasant symptoms that take some time to subside when one goes off the drug.   Your doctor is being careful but his job, of course, is to relieve your pain. There are many pain reducing drugs available now. He should be able to find you something.   http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/oxyapap_ad.htm
