Q: Had to go to ER this weekend due to uncontolable breakthrough pain.

I had to go to the ER last night, could not get my pain controled!  my pain meds have been changed several time at my pain clinic, last week they put me on kadian, which is a morphin drug.  I explained to my doc that every time they have tried morphin before- it never worked!  said i was tolerant.  I called my doc mid-week  and told her i was still misserable, they doubled the kadian- still not working, ended up in ER yesterday with 2 shots of diladid.  i had done some shopping with my kids before it spiked so bad, didn't feel like i was doing anything over the top!  Tomorrow i will call my doc immediatly to do my best to get them to see my right away!  I am concerned that i do not know how to explain this to them properly- in a way to get them to move on to something other then the kadian.  This is the 3rd time i have ended up in ER for help getting ontop of the pain- they are wonderful at our ER- I am greatful for that.

Can anyone give me any advice on getting my doc to take this a bit more seriously?  I am certainly not complaining about my doc- i am very greatful for them!!  i am sure if yesterday was not a weekend day i could of called them rather then going to ER.

I would apprecaite any advice out there on how to speak to the doc properly.  I refuse to  live in this pain!  I should be able to walk around a store for an hour or so with out ending up balling my eyes out and having to go to a hospital.  Also I am looking into getting a scooter type thing so i can spend time with my family oustide of my house- has anyone gotten one?  any advice on that?

Hi,

I've learned from the great people here that you just have to work your nerve up and talk and talk until they listen and if they don't you find a new doctor.  It helped me to write down what I wanted to say and ask before I went to the doctor. I've taken all sorts of pain meds over the years and they all seem to work for a time.

The first pain doc I had under medicated me to the point that I was overmedicating myself to control the pain, which in turn led to me being booted from this doctor and going without pain meds (of my own choice for about six months) The new doctor I've found listens and I'm learning that in some areas it's pretty rare.

You shouldn't have to live with pain it's not fair and in truth life is to short to live with it everyday, the less you can do the more depressed you become it's a terrible cycle and can only be broken by you.

I was told here a number of times, these doctors work for us and they and we need to learn that, if one doesn't listen, doesn't understand or doesn't want to do either then find a new one.  Doctor's aren't perfect and can only help you as much as you are willing to let them.  It took all I had to tell my doctor how I felt, what I expected from her and in turn what she expected from me.

Recently my meds were stolen (long story bi-polar son in law) along with my car, money etc.  I didn't file a report with police as suggested (and I agree) but when I talked with her she didn't bat an eyelash and believed me completely. I know she believed me because there is a mutual respect intact.

The only advice I can give you is to talk to your doctor.

I hope this helps

Vickie

I know exactly what your going through. I have a very long story in regards to SI Joint Issues, Osteoarhritis, Spinal Stenosis, Kyphosis,Herniated Discs and Buldging Discs. One specialist said I had Drug Abuse Problems ( I was only seeing him) so this has been on my record for 5 years. With this I am unable to find any one to take me at all seriously, Even though I have CT's and MRI's that show all the degenerative things and signs of MS. I found a doctor through the same clinic, she listened and decided I should be treated with meds and other treatments to help build stronger muscles. She is absolutly wonderful and your right in what you say, Doctors are far and few in being compationate of their patients. We pay them enough and were not always looking for pain meds! One doctor told me to get the hell out of his office because he saw I had been perscribed a narcotic 8 months ago and that I have a serious problem! Is that how they treat people with addiction problems??? They seem to judge you immediatly when you walk in with ANY type of pain and think your a seeker. I'm just happy my medication is carefully watched and I do lots of meditation.  I feel for you and wish you only the best. It's so hard when people look down on you right when they start asking what your pain level is.
