Q: Looking for a doctor to tell me about narcotics for FIbromyalgia pain

I have had doctors tell me that narcotics for fibro pain wont work, if I have taken them and know that they do why wont they llisten to me? Are they just not allowed to give out narcotics?

What is the deal here, I am in bad pain and this Elavil crap isnt working. Savella didnt work,it made me hollow inside. The elavil was the worse, i broke a front tooth because of it and couldnt speak the right words when I talked.

This pain is terrible and I want a doctor to tell me what they think about the narcotics for fibro pain because Im sorry,I am no junkie but I need something to block this pain so I can get back to a normal life.

If you have never dealt with this, then you dont know how it feels to be fine one second and then your whole body hhurts and there is nothing you can do about it because they wont prescribe you aything.

For a long time the doctors wouldnt give me anything for my pain (they think its fibro but not 100%).

Doctors legally have to treat pain! I am pain on narcotics and my pain is so much better. It is giving to me to take as needed and I do so. But it seems that once I take it the rest of the week things are less tight. Of course doctors try to give you some other type of meds before the give you narcotics. but they always seem to put it off way too long.

What I did is when I went to the doctors I gave mine a list of things that I couldnt do that I could do before the pain started. On this list was such things as "walking down stairs without help" and "making my bed" The list was long. I let her know that I didnt feel like i had a life anymore and I always needed someone else to help me. That I was never going to live a normal life if something didnt give. I told her that until she gave me something to control the pain daily and or was clear on what was going on with me then I NEEDED something to help till them. She sees the improvement, she sees I am happier too. I only take it when I can not bare not too. I bring the pill bottle in to show her how little I have taken and she trusts me. She will even call over a med if I call in telling her I need it.

I thought I would have to change doctors or take legal action but she seemed to finally get it.

I also brought in with me a few articals the where sent to me from this site on chronic pain and pain killers which I will now send to you. It is unethical to leave you in so much pain without trying to help. My doctor didnt end up reading them. She looked fastly over my list. I have highlighted the bigger ones, the more important ones. But she got the point.

Good for you for persisting until you got the right treatment. Several earlier studies suggested that narcotics were not helpful in FM - which may be why your doctors are reluctant to prescribe them. Some more recent studies, however, have suggested that tramadol can be helpful in FM; hopefully doctors will be taking another look at this type of medication for patients for whom other pain drugs do not help.
