The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies considers an adequate intake of Vitamin D for women 51 - 70 to be 400 IU (10 mcg).  However, there have been many questions as to whether that is sufficient for most people, especially as they get older.  And if you have a deficiency of Vitamin D, you would probably need a higher dose. The upper limit recommended is 2,000 IU as toxicity can occur at higher doses.

It would be a good idea to call your doctor and ask what dosage he recommends since he apparently recommended it for a specific reason.  With most doctors, you can call the office and leave a message with their nurse, who should call you back with an answer within 24 hours.

I hope that helps.
