Remicade has the potential to produce quite a few side effects but none of the sources I checked mentioned weight gain. In contrast weight loss is a possible side effect.

I just stumbled upon your question, which is one I have been asking for almost 2 years that I've been on Remicade for UC myself.  I have gained about 40 lbs, thought it was from the prednisone initially, but I've been off of that for over a year and still have this weight I can't get rid of.  I walk about 3 miles a day, eat about 1700 cal a day and see a dietician.  I have never weighed what I do now, not even 9 months pregnant.  It has to be from the Remicade, that's all that's new in my life.

Yes .. Remicade can cause weight gain. I gained 15 pounds in the 2 weeks after my first injection. My GI doc didn't seem to know of any link between Remicade and weight gain, but nothing else had changed that could have possibly caused it. I have had to cut my calorie intake nearly in half and increase my exercise just maintain my current weight. I recently found an article that shows that Remicade has been shown to cause weight gain in Crohns patients. I can only assume that this might apply to those of us with UC as well. Here is the link to the article.

Given that one of the most frequent Sx of UC/CD is weight loss I wonder if the weight gain is due more to a healthier GI tract and willingness/ability to eat more than it is due to any direct effect of the medication?
