Q: Is Propoxyphene N-APAP 100/650(C), which is generic for Darvocet, considered a blood thinner?

I have been prescribed the above drug for arthiritis pain to be used as needed. I plan to have an EGD procedure done next week. The GI doctor's office instructed me to stop all blood thinners, such as aspirin, etc. 5-6 days before the procedure. While waiting for the procedure, I wondered if I could take the above drug for pain, which seems to continuously occur. If the drug is considered a blood thinner, then I would not want to take it until after the EGD procedure is completed. A knowledgeable response would be appreciated. Thanks.

You should check with your doctor's office about the advisability of using any drug prior to your operation. (Hopefully they gave you a list of drugs you should not be taking.) None of the websites I checked out suggested that Darvocet had blood thinning properties. Its a (weak) opioid pain reliever.

You shouldn't take Darvocet if you are taking a blood thinner; this is because those brands of Darvocet with aspirin can  cause stomach bleeding - which can be exacerbated by blood thinners.
