Q: I have been on Methadone Maintenance (after becoming addicted to Percocet because of pain) for 5 years.

Unfortunately, I will be moving to Western MA soon and the clinic in the town I am moving to charges $18/day, which I absolutely cannot afford! Does anybody know of any alternatives? Maybe a doctor that would prescribe it? I am on a relatively high dose - 170 mg - but any less didn't work. I have no idea what I'm going to do once I move - please help. Thanks!

$18/day from each client is a nice money-making industry. Being on methadone maintenance is really just substituting one chemical for another. Granted, methadone is more stable than percocet. Without all the highs and lows, the cravings and withdrawl symptoms are minimized.

But wouldn't it be nice to be chemical free and save money? Yes, there is a way if that is your ultimate goal. The first step would require you to wean the methadone down to half of what you are on. This will take months by stepping down your dose by 10% every month. Once you get to 80 mg/day you can then be considered a candidate for Suboxone, the ultimate exit strategy.

If you do not want to exit the methadone maintenance pathway, I am afraid that you are stuck paying the "dealer"... oh, I mean doctor, $18/day.

Your life pathway is your choice.
