Q: what would cause the1st joint in little finger to suddenly become swollen, red, and a knot come up

i went to bed one night and the next morning i awoke w/my little finger not looking the way it did the night before.  Finger was swollen @ the 1st joint ..... looking a little bluish red and it was painful to bend that joint only. I also noticed there was a knot on the inside part of the joint and it's still there.  The bluish red color on the knuckle left after a few days but finger still has the round knot on it.  what could cause this?  I can't really afford to see a doctor as i have no job and no insurance.  I would appreciate any input or advice.

Thanks in advance

You might consider looking into rheumatoid arthritis.  I have heard that it causes joints to swell and can be heriditary.  Look at, they have a symptom checker and their articles are full of good advice.  Unfortunately, if this is the case, you will need to see a doctor and get medicine for the condition.  Try to use your joints as much as possible is what I think i have read on the subject. is also a good source for medical reference.  Look at both of these sites and best of luck to you.  maybe there is a clinic in your area that can help you?  Josie.
