Q: Synergistic effects of Xanax taken with Vicodin

For years my physician has been perscribing Xanax with Vicodin to relieve my pain.  I was told that these two medications work together in a synergistic way to control pain. Is this true?

I wouldn't be surprised at all. Xanax is anti-anxiety drug and increased anxiety has shown to increase pain sensitivity. Other anti-anxiety drugs are also sometimes used to treat pain. Xanax turns down the activity of parts of your brain that may be overactive. Interestingly Vicodin does the same thing in a different part of your brain. By coming these two you may be getting more bang for your buck. I hope that is working for you.
