Q: Can you give me some information about Fibromyalgia?

My Fiance has been in alot of pain the last 7 months. She has always had pain, but she has a HUGE pain tolerance and always just dealt with it. At first they though it was Lupus. She just saw a specialist a few days ago. She said she didn't believe it was Lupus. That she thought it was Fibromyalgia. She saw alot of symptoms that led her to believe it was Fibromyalgia. She took ALOT of blood and X-Rayed her ankle which she hurt six months ago, but the pain won't go away. It seems to be getting worse as she gets older. Is this normal?

She sees her again in two weeks. The specialist is very hard to see and she waited 3 months just to get in to see her. The specialist said she would be prescribing Lyrica for the pain. Once she got all the tests back. Has anyone on here taken this drug and if so. How well does it work for the pain. What are the main side effects you had and are they bad? Is Lyrica a narcotic and how does it work? Any information you can give me would be great.

'Spreading pain' is common in fibromyalgia. The problem appears to arise from increasing activation of the pain producing circuits in the brain and, unfortunately, under- activation of the pain inhibiting circuits. This  results in pain beginning in one part of the body - say your fiances ankle - spreading over multiple parts of the body. Plus FM patients often suffer from hypersensitivity to other stimuli such as light, odors, chemicals, touch.  The pain is often accompanied by fatigue, poor concentration and sleep problems. Since poor sleep can actually cause FM it's important to do what's necessary to get good sleep.

Lyrica was the first drug approved for FM and Cymbalta was recently approved. Both drugs work in some patients and not others. Check out the below URL's for information on FM and Lyrica.
