'Spreading pain' is common in fibromyalgia. The problem appears to arise from increasing activation of the pain producing circuits in the brain and, unfortunately, under- activation of the pain inhibiting circuits. This results in pain beginning in one part of the body - say your fiances ankle - spreading over multiple parts of the body. Plus FM patients often suffer from hypersensitivity to other stimuli such as light, odors, chemicals, touch. The pain is often accompanied by fatigue, poor concentration and sleep problems. Since poor sleep can actually cause FM it's important to do what's necessary to get good sleep.
Lyrica was the first drug approved for FM and Cymbalta was recently approved. Both drugs work in some patients and not others. Check out the below URL's for information on FM and Lyrica.
