Has your husband talked with his doctor about his ongoing back pain?  If not, that would be the first step.  If his primary care physician hasn't been able to help him, he should ask for a referral to a specialist.  His family doctor would be the best person to determine what type of specialist would be best.  If he would rather just go directly to a specialist, a physiatrist would be a good place to start.  Physiatrists specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation.  They treat both acute and chronic pain as well as musculoskeletal disorders.  Typically their treatments may include both traditional and complementary therapies (i.e., physical therapy, massage, prescription medication, etc.). Other specialists he might want to consider would be a neurologist, rheumatologist or pain specialist.    I couldn't tell you whether his job injury has anything to do with his current pain problems.  Only a healthcare professional who can examine him and study his medical history would be able to that question.  I do hope he will pursue getting medical help with his chronic back pain.  There are so many treatment options available today that might help him.  I'd hate to see him suffer if he doesn't have to.     Good luck to both of you.
